I had a conversation today that threw me for a loop! This man has had an overweight male cat 20lbs that is 17 years old, feeds the kitty wet food only. He feeds the kitty twice once in the am and then in the pm. He told me his cat was a diabetic from age 12. A year after that he started to give his cat one clove ground to a powder mixed into his wet food. Six months later he said his cat was off insulin and has never had kidney, liver or pancreas issues. Has anyone here ever heard of this?

hi Joy,

i have certainly not heard of cloves aiding in diabetes in either humans or cats.

however, i have heard that cloves are naturally good at killing parasites. i wonder if some of the health issues his cat may have had were due to a parasite. very interesting story indeed.

Hi Stan, I did hear of clove tea for humans but I never heard of it for felines. My Mom once tried to get my dad to drink clove tea for his diabetes but... the taste was too strong. I also heard that this clove tea is used in the middle east for controlling blood sugar. I am new to feline diabetes 12/7 2010,I was just wondering if the more experience care providers here knew of such for cats and if anyone here used this treatment.

very interesting about the tea...i didn't know that.
i like to hear about alternative approaches to conventional medicine...sometimes i think the conventional stuff isn't always prescribed in patients best interests...
having said that, it's important to keep a level-head and do what feels right to you...there *can* be a fine line between "alternative" or "holistic" and just plain quackery.

if there is indeed something to the cloves idea, i would be willing to try it with eddie.

Essential oils which contain phenols are particularly toxic to cats and cause liver damage. These include Oregano, Thyme, Eucalyptus, Clove, Cinnamon, Bay Leaf, Parsley and Savory

Essential oils which contain ketones cause neurological symptoms. These include: Cedar Leaf*, Sage*, Hyssop*, Cyprus*, Lavender, Eucalyptus, Mint ,Caraway*, Citronella ,Clove*, Ginger*, Chamomile, Thyme and Rosemary (those marked * give particular cause for concern). http://www.messybeast.com/teatree.htm

I know the above is talking about the oils but unless you are using a trained Holistic vet, I wouldn't go putting anything in your cat that you have no idea of the effects on your cat. What humans can use and what dogs can use could kill a cat.

I have never, in over 12 years on this board, read one thing about cloves being used for diabetes in cats. There have been other questionable theories of other different remedies but bottom line is......canned food only, hometesting, and insulin. The minute you start trying different human meds without a vets advice you are risking the life of your cat. Always search for as much info as you can get before trying something new.
