CKD: when do I worry about phosphorus?

Old Quintus has long-standing CKD (stage II). It's been super stable for years. He gets fortekor and was previously on renal food (this last year) and on a mix of renal and obesity management before that (for his pal Tounsi, who died a year ago).

Now that I'm switching Quintus to DM (I'm at roughly 50/50 in the transition) I'm wondering how soon I need to worry about his phosphorus going up. Is it weeks, or can I not worry about this now (on top of all the rest) and check in a month or two? Do I need to be talking to my vet about phosphorus binders now, or can it wait?

Thanks for your advice on this matter.

NB: at this stage not interested in advice on giving him other food, I know a lot of people on the board are not fans of prescription food, but this is how I've chosen to roll for the time being.

Why not just feed a food low in carbs and phosphorus? Try weruva bff in cans. There's nothing in dm food that's any better for your cat then what you can buy in a store.

What were your cats phosphorous levels the lady time labs were run?

For the moment I want to stick with DM (there are too many moving parts in my life right now and I would rather not add trying to figure out if this or that food will work for me; I tend to do my research and foods available in CH are not the same as what you get in the US or UK).

IIRC they were "nice and where we want them" but I don't have the number handy.

gotcha. Well as long as his levels are good keep doing what you're doing. Here's info on phosphorus.

I looked up the nutritional info, and DM has over twice phosphorus as nf (297, 136). So I think you need to monitor the phosphorus with regular checks. Every six months at least.

It gives guidelines on target phosphorus levels for each IRIS stage. There are also links on that page to further info about controlling phosphorus levels - either with food or by using a binder.
