CKD recent increase in BG

Hi,

I am having some trouble getting my boy Sisko's BG down and was hoping someone on here may have some advice. He was diagnosed with Diabetes and stage 3 CKD about a year ago. His BG was pretty good with 2 U Lantis (100U syringe) b.i.d for a while but the last few months his numbers are staying between 275 and 350. We test at home. He was eating Royal Canine Renal food.
We upped his insulin to 3U and have changed his food to AvoDerm Chicken. I even bought a new bottle of insulin. Nothing has lowered his BG yet. I am planning to increase another unit but 4U seems high. He was so well managed before so I am not sure why it won't come back down.

Is 4U too much insulin?
Could this have to do with worsening kidneys or pancreatitis?

Sisko is 13yr old and weighs about 13lbs. He is acting totally fine and happy but his last full blood test showed slightly worse kidney numbers.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Hi Lindsay, some kitties do need more insulin than others, but we recommend that you only increase .25u at a time. By going up a full unit, you can easily miss the best dose. Hi Lindsay as Sharon mentioned every cat is different and some need more insulin 4 units is not too much, actually there is not really a dose that is too much for a cat, each cat needs what it needs of insulin but we wouln't recommend giving such a big increase, is best to increase in 0.25 units that is you will up his dose from 3 to 3.25 then hold the dose for at least 3 days or 7 depending on how much you are testing and your testing results even if you eventually get to 4 units you will get there slowly.

One more thing that is probably not helping is the food he's getting is very high in carbohidrates for a diabetic cat (I think between 13 and 17 % depending on the flavor but you do not mention exactly what chicken variety ) taking into consideration his stage 3 CKD take a look at Dr Lisa's list ( this is the link http://catinfo.org/docs/CatFoodProteinFatCarbPhosphorusChart.pdf ) and try to find some food that is less than 10% carhohidrates and less than 200 in phosphorus

What was his phosphorus level ? Are you giving suqs? if you could also post his lab results that would be very helpful
