So I fed my 3 civvies friskies special diet whitefish. I figured I would keep them on this diet since it is best. 2 threw up not long after. 3rd hasn't...yet. Of course he might later. They do this sometimes after eating. But usually just one and not as much. Anyone else had this happen? They free feed...should I take this food up? Don't want them to get so hungry they gobble down dinner and vomit. Do you think it was a bad can of food? Should I avoid this flavor?

When considering allergies, the ingredient list is useful since we don't care how much of the offending ingredient is in the food. The bottom line is that we don't want any of the ingredient to be present. Fish/seafood, beef, lamb, corn, wheat, and soy tend to be the most hyperallergenic ingredients for the cat - especially fish/seafood.

You will notice that many of the higher protein diets are fish-based but it is not a good idea to feed fish to cats. Or, at least not as their main diet. Fish can be high in mercury, high in PBDEs (fire retardant chemicals linked to hyperthyroidism), high in phosphorus (not good for older cats' kidneys) and can be very addicting. It is best to feed poultry-based diets to cats.

Rachel,

I don`t rarely feed my cats fish and never feed them beef. They rarely throwup. It would be my guess it was the Ocean Whitefish. I sure do hope they get top feeling better. Maybe try to give them something else with Turkey or Chicken.

Thanks Larry. After Gypsy being sick for the last few days and then losing her yesterday...I panic a bit.

Thanks to you Terri. I have some other flavors. I'll avoid fish. That was the lowest carb so I liked giving it. They throw up mostly from fish. Never realized that. I guess changing flavors at every meal isn't that necessary. I mean...they never had different flavors before!

I would panic as well after Gypsy was so sick. I would be saying oh no not again. Yes I would think it was most likely the fish. I think they should be fine with some other flavors, I feed mine Fancy Feast Chunk Chicken and Turkey. I tried the cheaper Friskies or Nine lIves nope they won`t eat it.They are spoiled.
Please let us know later they are alright if you have time to post.

OH, OH..........I just bought 50 sm. cans of Fancy Feast Salmon Feast Pate..........this was on the 'list' and had the least amt. of carbs/phos. and had a good rating.........it's only a 10 day supply for my 2 cats (1 civie) so will I be okay if I alternate some FF meat pates?? They like it

Gecko, if they haven't barfed from it, they might not be sensitive to the fish.

But I've read that you should not feed an all fish diet. I don't remember why. Maybe someone else can provide the reason. If my memory is correct, just alternating the fish with other foods should do the trick.

Everyone seems fine now Terri. Going to avoid fish for a bit and see if that helps. All 3 are acting normal. They've spent the day with me. Helps me heal some.

For one they're high in mercury, even people shouldn't eat fish more than once a week.

I think they do miss Gypsy. We've all been together for about 10 years. I miss her so I know they must.
