This evening I called a friend and found out she is having problems with her 11 yr old spayed female. Sunday ago she noticed the cat was walking oddly, maybe wobbly. Cat was not really eating or drinking much. Monday first thing she contacted one vet and was told to bring the cat in and drop it off. The vet has a habit of this and who knows when the cat would be seen. Friend refused and contacted another clinic. This clinic agreed to see the cat.

Visit results - X ray should fair amount of stool. Cat was dehydrated. Vet wanted to keep cat overnight, give fluids and do further tests the following day for a price of about $500. Friend said that was very expensive to spend and needed to talk to husband. Vet tech suggested clinic give fluids, send cat home with 3 doses of Colace (sp?) and she was to call the clinic and update vet tech the following day (Tuesday). Friend agreed. Clinic did subQ fluids and sent cat home with what was supposed to be 3 doses of Colace. Cost nearly $200. No subQ fluids were sent or, from what she said, offered to be used at home. Also, turns out there were not 3 full doses of Colace as friend found out tonight.

Friend called the clinic three times today and vet tech did not return her calls. Friend actually went to the clinic today as they called her son's house (caller ID?) to tell her she wrote out the check wrong. Apparently vet tech had left for the day, if I understood the timeline. I won't even say what I would have told them about the check.

I suggested she make sure cat stays hydrated, watch food intake and litter box. I tried to find the recipe for homemade electrolyte solution but couldn't. Meanwhile she gave cat 9cc of warm milk and was going to give it some bullion broth despite my concerns over ingredients. The cat has had two BMs since the vet visit.

I've offered to do subQ fluids if needed. Explained necessity of eating and hydration. I was going to take her some larger syringes and baby food but TSC closed and the road were close to sheer ice.

Last contact with her tonight she seemed almost resigned that the cat could very well die. She plans to contact another clinic in the morning or maybe have her husband call the clinic where they went Monday.

So, any suggestions for my friend?

Thanks,
Lylene

Do we know why he is constipated all of a sudden? Both those vets do not sound good at all...

Most people here use Miralax for consitpated cats. The dose is 1/4 teaspoon to 1/2 teaspoon. You can give it up to twice daily, I think. Dissolve the Miralax in water first and then mix it into canned food.

Canned pumpkin is another alternative. Look for regular canned pumpkin with no sugar or spices. You do not want canned pumpkin pie filling.

You can give enemas at home to the cat, just use warm water for the first, but you can also use just a bit of liquid dish soap if needed for a 2nd enema.
Add water to the cat's wet food, and purchase a kit for fluids from the vet.... easy enough to give them at home.
Scrap the pumpkin if already badly constipated, but start adding miralax to the watered wet food.
Watch for vomiting and loss of interest in food.... signs to get to the vet to have the stool removed there.

So, miralax in the food, lots of water in the food, warm water enema, and give subQ fluids at home... if really bunched up, it could take a few enemas, but it can be done at home.

Thank you - Civvie with severe constipation -

Thank you for all of the information. The cat is doing well. She was taken to another clinic today. They did bloodwork which came back normal. The vet was concerned about pancreas issues but no problems there. X ray looked good. Friends are happy with the visit and will be transferring to this clinic. Luckily this worked out because we only have three clinics in town and the next nearest is a very elderly vet a fair drive for them. Welcome to the boonies.

I will be copying all the info so she can go through it herself and have it for future reference if needed, as will I.

Thanks again. You came through for us again, as usual. You're the best.

BTW... Barry is still OTJ and has a new girlfriend- a 75 pound German Shepherd Dog we got in December. Unfortunately, the love is unrequited, but he still has hope. Occasionally I spread a little yogurt on his head so Lady will lick it off. He thinks he's in heaven. It's fun watching them. Poor dog.
