My weird, overweight, flea-prone, neurotic fur-licking, possible allergies ish cat appears to have something like a hot spot developing.... but on the side of his neck, a bit under the Seresto collar I put on him about a week ago.

I will call the vet Monday..... anything I can do for it right now? That doesn’t cost money or can be purchased via care credit (those are completely my only options right now)...? I have neosporin both pain relief and regular. I’m sure he would lick it off though eventually and I don’t know if that’s really okay or not.

{edit to add: I meant to ask, is anyone familiar with seresto causing problems that could lead to a “hot spot”?}

He has a number of weird issues, like his extreme food motivation ever since I had him neutered. To the point he snuck into my herpes cat’s room, caught her illness, and gave it to his brother.

I’ve been meaning to ask y’all for some advice in general about him. He is just under 8kg. Tubby. Half hairless from licking. I want to check his blood sugar sometime too. Before Alice’s FD, I was always worried he would be the one to develop it, because of his weight.

Another cutie

There are several possible side effects of Seresto. Some cats experienced chemical burns, skin irritation, swelling, breathing difficulty, vomiting, watery eyes and hair loss. There are also report of cats becoming lethargic or having seizures after wearing the collar for several weeks. Some cats have died.

Hopefully you have already removed the collar and absolutely should report this to your vet. Personally, I would never use a flea collar on a cat.

The fur mowing (psychogenic alopecia) could be caused by allergies (flea, food, environmental) or stress. It can be really hard to figure out what's causing it. One of my cats, also a red tabby, did the same thing. He had a severe flea allergy and I had to use Advantage every 2-3 weeks.

My vet office said to take off the Seresto collar and call and report the adverse reaction, which I did. The company offered to send me a month of advantage 2. Vet office said I could reuse the collar on my indoor/outdoor cat who has not had reactions in the past.

Would you put neosporin or anything on the hotspot?

possibly better to use just vaseline/petroleum jelly -- essentially Neosporin without the antibiotics (and some research indicates that the "carrier" -- the vaseline -- is the primary action in that to promote healing) -- just in case your civvie tries to groom the spot with paw and licking ... or rubbing against something -- the vaseline helps hold moisture against and within the skin, and softens the skin -- olive oil or coconut oil would work too

It’s Jakey, he groomed off his own pants! If he can lick it, he licks it. Thanks I have petroleum jelly in Alice’s supplies!
I made him a vet appointment for Wednesday. I haven’t been able to address his weird issues the last few months with Alice being so sick.

He is overweight though and I don’t want to give him something steroid for allergies etc. What both flea preventions and allergy type meds can we do? He is SO hard to pill......

if you have the time -- use diatomaceous earth (the food grade kind, sometimes pet stores have small bags but of course more economical to get the big bag at the feed store)

NOT the kind sold for hot tubs or pools

it loses effectiveness if it gets wet -- but it's harmless to mammals, chickens, etc -- it dessicates insects, gets inside of them and acts like sandpaper -- I used to put it in chickens' dust bath, kept them free of mites

powder or smooth it over him, just don't get it in lungs or so much that he breathes it in -- apply every time he goes someplace he could pick up flea, tick, mosquito -- I used a bath powder glove, easiest way I found to apply, and cats seem to like being groomed with that

allergies? I leave that to the experts

@CandyH and Catcat I LOVE diatomaceous earth SO much. Food grade of course! I have used it with him and fleas before, unfortunately I don’t have any right now and literally all cash right now is utilities, cat food and litter and hay, gas to get to vet and jobs and appts, medicine, and soap like for laundry and dishes the cats create. I have a little carecredit for the furbabies’ needs like a medicine or simple vet visit, those are my only resources. :p This is the ongoing budget. Sigh! But we are grateful because we have at all. :D

And speaking of mosquitoes I badly need something for Majyk’s ears since she goes outside. They look awful right now. Should I be worried she will get heart worm from her mosquito bites?
