Two tabby brothers, Chris and Ben( neutered 13 year olds) have been on Hills c/d for several years due to FUS. Wanting to switch to other food due to high carb content . What do I need to watch for in content ? Phosphorus levels ? Ash levels? Any suggestions for FUS kitties? Thank you so much in advance for knowledge and insight :)

Hi Beth,
Teasel was on Royal Canin Urinary S/O for a number of years because of repeated bouts of cystitis. Occasionally there was a UTI associated with the cystitis but many times not. I switched him to prescription DM at diagnosis and I add some Friskies or Fancy Feast pate to it for variety. I also add a generous amount of warm water to every meal. He has not had one single episode of FUS cystitis since diagnosis last January 2016. I suspect, but can't prove, that the extra water in his wet food has been beneficial.

Yet another diabetic victim of RC Urinary S/O. :( That's where Saoirse's problems originated from. I have been struck by the number of kitties who arrive here having been fed that particular diet.

I know you've made that observation in the past, Mogs. I found it intriguing.

So much thanks to you both. I can't help but think Elmo has experienced diabetes due to the high carb content he ate for several years prescribed for thyroid. That set me to investigating the c/d his civie "brothers" have been eating and is why it is now my determination to get them off of it. Currently am feeding half c/d and half Core Wellness beef venison and lamb. Not cheap but low in carb and phos. Makes me suspicious of prescription diets given out so readily by vets .

Elmo was on Hills Science Diet y/d as alternative to drugs for thyroid which he is now on anyway cos too high in carbs for diabetes!
