Hi, my civie cat Daphne is having some sporadic issues I was wondering if anyone had run into anything like this...
For background she is 17, is hyperthyroid, so is on meds to regulate, but it's complicated by the fact that she's in kidney failure so it's a delicate
balance as to how to treat her.
So, the episodes are as such, I come home to find her walking oddly swinging her head (bobbing up and down in a rapid motion), seems to recognize me but is pacing pacing pacing circling and sniffing sniffing sniffing...everything, the floor, the walls, trips on things....zero interest even in the tastiest food.
Today at lunch I came home to find her trapped under a dining chair. She had been blocked by a cross bar and was unsure how to proceed, so just like one of those wind up toys, was bumping it again and again. This is only the second time I've seen this (last episode was 2 weeks ago). Not sure how long it lasts, but it hasn't gone more than 30 mins after I arrive when she snaps out of it and is back to normal, albeit a little shaky.
I mix up mackerel and water to get her to drink lots in case she's low on fluids (once she snaps out of it, she's quite hungry)...but her skin tension doesn't indicate much other than mild dehydration, which is pretty much the status quo given her medical conditions.....
any thoughts? I don't know whether to take her to the vet or not this thing disappears so rapidly. I know she's on her last legs given her condition and want to keep her quality of life so don't want to put her through too much unnecessarily.
Thanks in advance!

Re: Civie cat medical problem....dehydration? any ideas?

Sounds like it might be neurological or dementia. Might be worth a quick call to the vet.

Re: Civie cat medical problem....dehydration? any ideas?

Yes thanks, I think I will call. I posted in another forum where someone suggested she may be having seizures since she recovers so fast.....it does seem to fit.

Re: Civie cat medical problem....dehydration? any ideas?

Could also be a heart problem. Her thyroid level should be checked......hyper-T can speed up the heart rate.

Re: Civie cat medical problem....dehydration? any ideas?

Do you give IV fluids at home for her dehydration? If not your vet can show you how. I agree that should have her checked. Meds can help if she is having seizures.

Re: Civie cat medical problem....dehydration? any ideas?

No we haven't had to start fluids yet, but it may be time......I just read that kidney failure can lead to seizures....that may be what's going on here, things have just progressed to a new level of awful....I may be missing the actual seizure and seeing the recovery part...
I'm going to make an appointment and get blood work done to see where we are. Her skin tension doesn't seem to indicate severe dehydration, but maybe I'm wrong on that...
Thank you all for your advice.....it really helps and helps clear my thoughts.......

Sounds more like a heart racing than it does a seizure. I had one cat that when it happened she would literally walk right through a water bowl and just keep going until her heart slowed down.

Just got a call from the vet now that the bloodwork is all back. Apparently her thyroid levels have taken another jump and an increased med dose is needed. Thank heavens her kidney values are still close to the same as last time and fluid levels were ok. Her blood pressure was ok, ...but the heart rate itself was very high and there was a big murmur which should calm down once the thyroid is back in check. Hopefully this is the cause of the seizures as well.
Thanks for all of your advice!
