Yesterday's Condo

Well, so much for my fantasy about changing the shooting location bringing the numbers down. Cinco is peeing more than he has been, which makes me even more concerned about all the yellow.

Next question: The vial of Lantus we are currently using was dispensed on 7/25/13. It has been handled gently and refrigerated the whole time, and the liquid is clear with no debris. Could it be time for a new vial? I just want to eliminate everything I can before hauling him in to the vet to find out what's going on. Of course, we still have the Opth to see, and I won't know when that will happen till at least tomorrow, but I'm not pinning all my hopes on the outcome of that visit.

Civvie Minka was fine this morning - no crying, no straining, usual great appetite. I think she was just tired of Cinco getting all the attention. Don't know how much of that my heart can take! :YMSIGH:

Sending healing vines to Ozy, Lucy and Jupiter, and anyone else who needs them. Hope Patty's car trouble turns out to be minor. Looking forward to Errol's OTJ party (anti jinx)!

I've heard people say they get 5-6 months on a vial of insulin once it's opened. I did a vial the first time and then moved to cartridges so I don't have any words of experience to add. I have had the odd cartridge go bad. When the numbers started drifting up and an increase didn't fix it, then a switch in cartridges has made a difference.

Sorry your civie was acting up. I think they do get jealous of the FD cats attention.

I don't think it could hurt to try new insulin. Cinco's numbers aren't bad but it's probably gettlng close to the time where the insulin may be toasty. Did you look really closely to see if there are any "floaties?"

Like Wendy, I've gotten a bad pen. There wasn't anything obviously wrong but Gabby's numbers were weird. Opening a new pen helped.

you can test it by getting a new pen or vial and giving a couple of shots from the new lantus. if the cycles stay looking the same, it's not your insulin. go back to your old one and finish it.

if your cycles look very different, it might be saying that the old one is no good. toss it and go to the new one.

i've done that a couple of times, and every time the old one was still fine, but i at least had the question answered in my mind.

Thanks, Wendy, Sienne and Julie.

Yes, Sienne, I checked pretty closely, with a magnifyer. It's hard to see it well, because the label covers most of the bottle, but I held it up to the light (a window) and turned it every which way, and I saw nothing but clear liquid.

I was thinking along the same lines as Julie. I don't want him continuing to go up if I can prevent it. I'll call Costco in the morning and order a refill. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Although I use pens, I have used a vial that my vet gave me (a patient donated it when her dog crossed). It was brand new and had been refrigerated and it appeared to have been handled properly. I got three months out of it. It did not have floaties in it or look cloudy. I've also gotten some pens that looked fine but weren't so I think anything is possible.

Julie's suggestion is a good one. Hopefully a new pen will help.

Hi Tricia, I hope you can figure out if it's the insulin with a new vial, paws crossed it will be the thing to bring Cinco into some nicer numbers :-D And I'm hoping that appointment can bring you some answers! I'm glad that Minka is feeling better, these pets of ours know how to test our heartstrings :o . Hope you have a nice evening

Thanks, Rachel. Minka is our oldest kitty and is Daddy's girl. With her hyper thyroid and COPD, she already has us on edge, so any little issue becomes a big deal. I guess I over-react because I feel like I let our GA Civvie, Kisa, down by not taking him to the vet soon enough. Not the kind of mistake I want to learn from.

Things are much calmer tonight (knock on wood). Hope you are staying warm and dry!

Hi Tricia,
I hope a new vial will bring Cinco's numbers down, if you are going to try that.
I'm glad you are having a clamer night tonight.

Hi Tricia!! Sounds like you have the same decision to make as I did...new insulin or not? I use a pen and the insulin in them tends to stay fresher because there's no air in contact with the insulin and no jostling of the insulin in the pen. It typically takes me two months to use an entire pen to the last drop. With this last pen, Champ had an almost 300 point drop with the very first dose of new insulin which told me his old pen was bad. It's very possible your insulin may need replacing. I agree with Julie...it doesn't hurt to start new insulin and, if the numbers don't improve, finish using the old vial. It's worth trying.

Thanks for asking your husband about my car! Unfortunately, it's been a long time since I've had an oil change. Because I typically drive less than 10,000 miles per year (more like 6,000), I only get oil changes twice or three times a year. If the guys who did the oil change didn't tighten something, I'm thinking it would have shown itself a while back. We had a major flood back in July/August that I got caught in. I swear I was scared for my life, that my car was going to get swept away. I was so proud of my car for being able to drive over all the huge rocks and debris and the surging water to get me home. I heard a lot of "knocking" going on under my car which I'm sure were rocks hitting the underside of my car. I'm just wondering if something was partially loosened or damaged and then finally "let go" last night. I guess I'll find out in the morning. I've got a tow truck scheduled to tow my car to the dealership tomorrow at 7 a.m. (thank you insurance!) so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's a simple fix!!

Re: Cinco AMPS 284 +3.5 261 +6 297 PMPS 270 +2.5 149

Thank, Patty. To further complicate things, he came down after his evening shot! confused_cat I thought he looked like he didn't feel well after dinner and his shot, but when I checked him a few minutes ago, he was much more alert and seemed fine. I called Costco and ordered the insulin. At least I'll have it if he's just messing with me and goes back up tomorrow!

My DH said it sounds like something dented your oil pan in that flood and it finally wore through. Shouldn't be a big deal. Labor will probably be the biggest expense. Good luck with it.
