We've not been posting lately because it's the same thing, over and over again. High pre-shots and somewhat manageable in between. He's been on 1.4U forever with no control... If I drop it to 1.0U, he skyrockets; if I increase it to 2.0U (to hopefully bring those pre-shots down), he drops like a rock. Case in point... On 2/23, I gave him 2.0U at 1 p.m. At 7 p.m. (+6), he was at 159 -- a good number. At 9 p.m. (+8), he was down to 45. Then, he bounced -- 522 the next morning...

He was scheduled for a dental earlier this month, but I wanted him checked prior to it. The vets decided NOT to do the dental because his gums were grayish, which is an indication of heart, lung, or kidney issues. We did bloodwork and a heartworm test. Heartworm was negative. BG at the vet was 92; creatinine was 47; BUN was 1.6 (high), everything else was normal. The vet isn't overly concerned about the BUN since the creatinine is still in the normal range.

So, why, why, why can't I get him regulated??? He's been back on insulin just over a year now. I don't care if he ever goes OFF insulin again, I'd just like to get rid of the skyrocket highs and drop like a rock lows...

Hi Susan,
have you tried Levemir? My Pudge (14y/o, male, 15 lbs) went OTJ on ProZinc, but his 2nd remission was on Levemir since that's what I had available at that time. Chuck might like it and his ride might be less bumpy.
Best wishes,
Sophie

Chuck was on Lantus for about 6 weeks back in 2008, and went into remission. When he started back on insulin in 2013, we started with Lantus. He didn't regulate/stabilize on Lantus, so we switched to ProZinc. I'm not sure that Levemir would stabilize/regulate him at this point, since Lantus didn't.

Does anyone have any experience with Lantus vs Levemir? Thanks!

Susan,

You might want to send a PM to Momma of Muse, she has used Lantus and Lev. She will be switching her cat Autumn to Prozinc now. She might be able to give you some insight.

I am glad to see you again, Susan. And sorry to hear Chuck is still struggling. I don't know why - it could that his other issues make the diabetes regulation difficult. It could be that he just has strange reactions to insulin. It is a hormone after all and think of the very different reactions people have to hormones.

You might check out Lucian's ss. They are different cats with different isssues, but so far (anti jinx) Deb has found a way to regulate him with ProZinc, after steep drops on both Levemir and Lantus. She is dosing a small amount every 8-10 hours, depending on Lucian's numbers.

Sometimes it just takes time. It was about a year and half before Cass was close to what I'd call regulated. I know this doesn't help.

Hi again, Susan

ProZinc is my favorite insulin because the idea of depot insulin, like Lantus & Levemir, has always scared me. The reason I suggested Levemir is that it has gentler curves than Lantus & ProZinc. Additionally, I wonder if it possibly works more effectively with long-term diabetics than Lantus - no scientific back-up for that, just personal observation. But as some wise gal or guy has probably already said: the med that's perfect is the one that works in one's very unique case and not a statistical conclusion.
Sometimes just time will tell & 'stick-to-it attitude' wins the day.
All my best to you & Chuck,
Sophie
