Christine and Bloo - pg 2 continued

Can anyone stear me in the right direction for syringes? I am having a very hard time finding what my vet suggested near me. She wrote a script for...

U100 - .03 (1/3) cc, 29 gauge

Walmart near me looked at me like I was crazy. Walgreens has something similar but only sells in bags of 10. That's what I've been getting by on. I would like to find a box of 100.

I am also wondering what everyone does with the needles afterwards. Doctors offices use sharps boxes. My dad used to break the needle off and throw in garbage. I don't want to do that. Seems unsafe still.

Hi Christine - I bought the same needles you mentioned, but in 31 gauge, which is finer (and therefore more comfortable for the cat). I bought mine off amazon so I would get them fast (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C96LS75?) but if you have a bit of time I found much cheaper ones on this website other members recommended (https://www.adwdiabetes.com/product/1316/surecomfort-u100-syringes-half-unit-31g-3-10cc-5-16in-100ct).

That website also has a variety of sharps containers (I need to buy one as well, the one I bought from the vet for Adequan shots is almost full):

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much! What do you do with your full sharps container? Do you turn it in to the vet or just toss it in the garbage?

The one I bought from the vet includes a disposal fee, which means I can return it to them and they'll dispose of it for me. It's also way more expensive than what you can find online.
I think every city has different disposal policies? Where do you live? I can look it up for you :)

What you do with used syringes depends upon what you state/county/city requires. Go to your state/county/city website and like under refuse disposal and see if you can find out what to do with them. They can be referred to as medical waste or "sharps".
My locality just says put them in a shatterproof container and tape lid on and mark the container with "SHARPS". Sometimes a plastic milk container is listed as not being satisfactory. A plastic laundry detergent container is usually good.
Many caretakers here clip the needles and just put the needleless syringes in the regular trash

You can get the syringes you want at Walmart. Trust me on this....the workers in the pharmacy are mostly idiots when it comes to understanding their own product.

The Relion 3/10ml, 30 or 31 gauge insulin syringes are what you want. They will come in one of these 2 packages (only difference is the length of the needle and it doesn't matter) They are $12.58/100

Both 30 and 31 gauge are very tiny and most cats don't even feel it.

Notice how both boxes have a purple "stripe"

These will be the same as the .03 (1/3) cc that I need? I'm going crazy with all of this. Wish my vet would just sell me the damn needles that she wants me to use.

Yes they are the same - .03 cc means the same as 3/10mL. The different notations are confusing as heck! Also ridiculous that your vet doesn’t stock them for sale, but hopefully it’ll be way cheaper once you do find them.

Yes...they are 3/10ml (or 0.3cc)....the difference between what your vet ordered was the gauge of the needle (how "thick" it is). The higher the number, the thinner it is, so 30 gauge is thinner than 29, 31 is thinner than 30....so either 30 or 31 gauge will be more comfortable for kitty

The only reason I mention either 30 or 31 is because sometimes your Walmart may have both, sometimes they may only have 30 gauge or 31 gauge. Either one is fine to use. (and these will also have half unit marks which makes it easier to do the small doses we use).

I've even had people take the picture in with them to show the person behind the counter to make sure they get the right ones.

Thank you all so much!! I think they had them when I asked last time but the girl behind the counter said that 29 gauge would be for a large dog and that I would be crazy to use it on a cat. I couldn't believe they worked in the pharmacy.

Im getting ready to ship out those Lantus pens for you and I'll include a couple of the syringes they're talking about here for you too!
