I'm a newbie. My cat Oliver was diagnosed as diabetic yesterday.

We're going to try herbs to bring his blood sugar under control. Has anyone had experience with these herbs? I did a search and saw that some folks had tried single herbs but didn't find anything indicating that they had tried one of the formulas available for humans.

I have seen talk here about this, you may want to do a search for older posts by typing in herbs or such and see what comes up.

Personally, I don't know how effective that will be, have you tried a diet change - ie feeding only low carb wet food. Many cats do really well with just a food change that insulin may not be necessary. Or insulin may still be needed but a very low dose for a short period of time.

Are you home testing so you can see what the blood glucose (bg) levels are? If not, are you willing to learn?

I'm a great believer in naturopathy but all the research I have done says herbs are not effective in bringing BG down in cats. Be particularly careful giving cats any sort of remedy that has been designed for humans as we are very different species. The most obvious eg that comes to mind is asprin which will kill a cat, another eg I have from my own experience was in giving my cat a human formula glucosamine chrondroitan mix for arthritis, it stopped him limping but it now looks like this may have been what caused his diabetes, apparently the glucosmine mix for humans is too strong for cats. I would not give your cat a human formula anything unless you are very very sure that it's safe. As I said I don't believe herbs will work for FD anyway but rather than just not working you may end up causing your cat harm.

i'm giving my cat, punkin, chinese herbs Di Gu Pi, that were given to him by a vet who is also a veterinary acupuncturist. Punkin has acromegaly (a tumor in his pituitary gland that causes the diabetes) and we're getting him acupuncture treatments to help his pain. i give him 2 capsules twice a day. we started the herbs 11/25. the vet would like him to have 3 capsules per dose, but it gives him diarrhea so we've stayed at 2.

this formula is only sold to vets.

i also give him insulin and would not skip the insulin in order to see if the herbs work. the insulin is a certainty. it is dangerous to the cat's body to remain in high numbers for too long.

the first step you can take to improve oliver's BG (blood glucose) is to switch him to a low-carb, canned food diet. many of us feed fancy feast classics or friskies pate style - those are all low carb. you can find detailed information on feline nutrition at http://www.catinfo.org and lists of carbs and other food values in the janet & binky's list

if you have had him on dry food, which many of us also did, that alone may make a huge difference in the BG. making the switch now before you've started insulin is an excellent idea. it can take a couple of days for the effects of carbs to leave oliver's body, depending on how his body works. if you home-test and see what's happening we can help you with your next steps.

and welcome to the Sugar Dance! we'll be glad to help you with whatever questions you have.

Tomorrow I am going to send out a home testing kit to Ellen (Sanity Claws) so that no matter what course of treatment she tries, she can find out at home if it is working.

Hello! I was just trying to find out if it was allowable to list an herbal feline pancreatic- healing product I've been using on this site, to see if others knew about it, and what they thought. I guess it will will be ok- I don't think it's spamming. Anyway, after 4 weeks or so on GlucoEnsure, his BG suddenly went from being in the 350-425 range, including nadirs, which it had been at for two months, down to about the 260-360 range. It's two weeks later, now, and still about the same. So it seems as though it is effective, though the jury is still out. Has anyone else tried it? The website Buzzillions has 4 or 5, 5-star reviews on it.
