Hi-
Wasn't sure if this is the right forum for this. But the HAlO Liv a Little freeze dried chicken treats are a Hit and the main reason Hank is willing to take his testing like a man (mostly. But they are ridiculously expensive. I know they can be had for somehwat less online, but STILL really high.

I've seen others out there but we've not tried them. Many of the online stores will give breaks on multiple units, or if buying the larger size, etc.. Also cheaper to ship that way. But I hate to go out on a limb with something he may not like as well.

A couple we've looked at are Pure Bites..I found like an 11+ oz bag of these so comes out fairly better. Anyone tried these?
Has anyone found any other's they like or recommend? In particular if your cat liked the Liv a Little's and likes something else equally as well.

OR if you have found the Halo treats cheap somewhere. They don't make them in very large sizes so keeps them expensive.
Seems like for the medium/lg size of some of these they are running $16 or more. TOO MUCh.
best deal i found is I think $7-8 for small sizes. Highway robbery.

Any suggestions on brands that are great or tips on where some deals are? coupons, etc.?

thanks!

I am specifically looking for freeze dried 100% chicken.

i'm currently alternating in some of the Prime Bites chicken and Mousie seems to like them. they are a bit harder than the cod or salmon we typically use. i typically use the Beefeaters freeze dried cod or salmon that i can pick up at Petsmart. all freeze dried seem to be too expensive to me in all honesty but it is what it is i guess. the Beefeaters run me about $6.97 for a tub i think it is. they come in big chunks but i just break them into smaller pieces

(eta: oops, mixed up pure bites with prime bites. corrected to show i'm using some prime bites now, not pure bites :) )

hey Cindy-

I initially bought 1 each of the lIv a little beef and chicken freeze dried treats. The beef came in a slightly larger size for same $, but he didn't like them...LOVED the chicken. And, they seemed to be a little harder than the chicken.
So you had not tried these so you could compare to the Pure Bites? if those are also harder, he may not like them as well either. They are both 100% chicken breast, but marinated, so the flavor may not be equally appealing to them.
I better buy a bag retail somewhere before i get a bunch online. I found the purebites for like $12 online, but for a bigger bag, like 6 oz. http://www.kingwholesale.com/

the halo are only 2.2, that's the largest they come. It's a scam...they hooked him like drugs and now i can't afford to keep the supply going.
http://www.bulknutrition.com/p8234_Liv- ... _Halo.html but with the shipping, not so great.

I may try these though..sounds like your guys like em.

Oh cool, Nicole. Had not heard of these. How much are they at Petsmart? they weren't on the site when I looked them up.
Is that where you get them?

betty

no i haven't used the Pure Bites. i know someone on here has though, just can't remember who. i remember them posting about them and that's when i found out about checking the dog sections in stores for treats. maybe add "Anyone use Pure Bites?" to your subject line in your original post?

So far all these online sites for any of these have $5-6 shipping fees or more, so kinda loses the point. You save 5$ buying retail, then spend it on shipping.
How much did you say you paid retail?

I have bought both Pure Bites & Prime Bites (virtually the same) except in my experience the Pure Bites were more expensive.
However, the Prime Bites are sold at Petsmart (where I buy mine) & they are not expensive & usually on sale with the Pet Perks card. They can be found in the Dog Section.

I've tried both the Liv A Littles and the Pure Bites. I was buying the Liv A Littles until we started running into problems with really hard treats that were almost impossible to break up, I actually had to take a meat tenderizer to them to get small enough pieces for my cats. The Pure Bites are much easier to break and my cats like them just as much as the Liv A Littles. They are expensive but I use salmon treats more often here so a bag of the chicken treats lasts us quite a while.

I've always used Real Food Toppers, http://www.realfoodtoppers The chunks of chicken are huge and easily broken into smaller pieces. The bottom of the bag always contains powdered chicken which is great for sprinkling on top of food. You can even rehydrate the chunks in water for a few minutes and give that (water and all) to your cat to eat  A bag lasted my cat at least a few months but I also gave him other treats. It's about $15 or so for a bag... at least the last time I checked.

I've never tried Halo Liv-A-Littles, mostly because the container is so small and the chicken looks dried out and hard.

Stella and Chewy's Carnivore Kisses is another brand but I've never tried that one either: http://stellaandchewys.com/kisses.html

Here is a list of other low carb healthy treats, including freeze dried ones: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=9172

We've used both Pure and Prime as well as the Beefeater's. They are all crack to my 5. They do NOT like the Beefeater's Shrimps though. The Petsmart Prime ones come in a beef flavor that mine hated, so we only do FDCC (freeze dried chicken crack) and the Beefeater's Salmon crack.

This is how bad the addiction is...

I have to pour them from the bags into tupperware containers, make *sure* the lid is sealed shut and then put them in a cabinet hidden behind the beef flavored ones and I have to do this when no one is looking. Otherwise they get stolen. Then I'm sweeping up FDCC dust from my floor while Echo tries to roll in it like it's catnip or something.

I use the pure bites and yes I buy them from Kingswholesale - it's the cheapest place I found for them.

And ounce for ounce, purebites from Kings is less expensive than halo and prime bites from Pet smart - the prime bites are great if you run out and need to satisfy the kitty fix.

My girls go bonkers over purebites - since they tend to come in larger pieces, I break them up before serving.

That's cool Amanda - I'm sure you get a nice discount for that. Otherwise, it's pretty expensive - $4.95 for 1.3 ounces, plus shipping. Ouch!

Join Halo's newsletter and they'll send you coupons. I am still using a $5 off coupon they sent me when I joined. Also, I have found the Halo products cheaper at my health food store (Natural Grocers) - several dollars cheaper than PetCo.

First of all, I can't tell you for sure these are diabetic-friendly- from looking at the ingredients I think they are but hopefully someone else on the board will correct me if I am wrong.

The treats my cats love is first of all, Greenies (chicken flavor)- even my civvie cat who turns her nose up at everything else LOVES these- they should be called kitty crack, lol. I give them sparingly but are a good way to get Curly to let me poke his ear. The protein seems high enough that I would think they would be okay if not giving too much.

The other treat they both love is Cosmic Cat tuna flakes. They are 100% dried tuna so I know they are okay as far as no carbs, and the cats love them. Did I say LOVE? lol

Lastly, I give Curly sparing amounts of Cat-sip, which is milk that I was told has the lactose taken out of it so that cats can digest it. I don't know how diabetic-friendly it is but he pines for the milk from my cereal and it breaks my heart. I try to use this sparingly, though, as this is one of the things he will always go for when he is not wanting to eat.

The nice thing is that none of the above are very expensive. Hopefully if any of them are not good for diabetic kitties someone will let me know.

Not low carb :-Q

Ingredients: Chicken Meal, Ground Brewers Rice, Ground Wheat, Corn Gluten Meal, Poultry Fat (Preserved With Mixed Tocopherols), Sprayed Dried Hydrolyzed Chicken Protein Concentrate, Oat Fiber, Natural Chicken Flavor, Vegetable Oil (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Natural Poultry and Fish Flavor, Sodium Gluconate, Brewer's Dried Yeast,...

I put the high carb ingredients in bold. Definitely a no-no treat. None of the other Feline Greenies varieties are good to feed. There are much better low carb, healthier treats you can feed.

These are fine since they are 100% tuna.

Ingredients: Lowfat milk, lactase enzyme, taurine.

Looks low carb to me. A little Catsip shouldn't raise bgs much, if at all.

Thank you for checking those ingredients for me! Bummer about the Greenies- they love those like crazy. Good to know they are no-nos. I guess I could keep those around for my hypo kit, tho. I'm glad the other two are okay.

Corn gluten is a protein not a carb. Thus, corn gluten meal would also be a protein. Also, oat fiber is a fiber, not a carb.
