Chicken stock/broth

If I make my own chicken stock/broth, with nothing added except the chicken & water, can I used it to make the frozen food cubes instead of plain water?

I've noticed with Ruby that the first thing she does with a new bowl of food is slurp up as much of the liquid that comes in the can as possible. The dryer it gets, the more encouragement it takes to get her to finish her bowl. I'm not talking about "gravy"...just the liquid that the Classic Fancy Feast varieties all seem to have. I'm thinking maybe if I added some plain stock, that might help.

Seems some cats bg's spike on boiled chicken while others don't. If it doesn't affect her bg's and doesn't have other stuff in it, it should be fine. I'd take the fat off of it tho'....

Add some water to it when you first open the can too - you don't have to make soup, I just 'cut' it up with a spoon some then pour it all on a plate. The water adds to the 'juice'...

HUGS!

Right now I dump the "puck" into the bowl then swish a tiny bit of warm water in the can to get up all the tasty juice (blech!), then mash it up with a fork.

Funny story...last night my husband fed her. He dumped the puck into the bowl but didn't mash it up. He tried to walk away and Ruby started batting at his legs and tried to trip him. He finally realized what her problem was and was thoroughly scolded until he mashed it up for her. I'm sorry I didn't get to see it.

I've been spoiling Racci in getting her switched over to wet food. I make her chicken breasts with no skin or anything in about an inch of water. Then I break it up and mix it with the wellness 3oz turkey entree and pour the wter/juice over it. She loves it. I found I have to mash the turkey though or she just pulls the chicken out to eat and pushes the turkey canned stuff away.

I do the raw and froze them in ice cube trays. Once defrosted (in the micro) I add almost another ounce of water and mix it together with a 1/3 of FF- the small can- and mush some more.

The first to go is the juice! I'll continue to add water to the left over bits until it is all gone.

It has increased her water intake during meals and decreased her water bowl intake (and pee). I have thought about organic chicken broth or even bullion cubes but plain water has worked well.

All of a sudden the day before yesterday, Racci decided again that she would not eat the wet food again!!! I'm going nuts with her. I thought it was just a temporary thing because she wasn't feeling well, but she's still doing it! Last night I wound up giving some dry food to get something in her and her numbers went up!. Today she woke me much too early to show me she pooped and to clean her box and her (she has an infection and knows I want her kept clean so tells me every time. So I stumble out half asleep and take care of her and her wet dinner is still there!

I took her dish washed it, and gave her fresh, mashed, but wound up putting too much water, too tired to put more wellness in again, warmed it up, gave it to her. I got my coffee and sure enough she refused to eat it again. Now she's staring at me like 'where's my food?". GRRRRRRRR

I don't know what I'm going to do with her. I tried parmesagn cheese, chicken,, all the things she likes. I even put a little sour cream in it. I'm going to eat and give her some of my cream cheese like she usually gets and maybe that will get her digestive juices flowing & some of the liquid absorbed in the meantime.

Any suggestions other than flora fauna? Thought of that but have to go get it later or order. The only pet supply near me is Petco and they're super expensive, at least a third higher than everyone else.

I've tried so many types already that it's ridiculous. I keep giving these open cans of cat food to my daughter-in-law for her cat who will eat just about any wet food. He loves wet! Every cat I ever had or knew loved wet, except Racci! I tried all the premium brands, Fancy Feast in 10 flavors since they had a sale on 10, Wysong different types (my Calli loved Wysong & Avoderm) Core, Nutro, Merricks - I can't even remember them all. I have 3 open cans in the fridge now!

When I spoke to the vet again today she said not to worry about it now because she's in pain and she has to eat and her fructosamin was really good this last time but I hate falling back again when she was doing so well finally! She was finally at the point where I could say she was just about regulated and I could depend on certain numbers from her and since she got sick and is insisting on her comfort food and is all stressed, her numbers are way up again all of a sudden.

I know it is not the most pleasant thing, but have you tried to dropper feed her? My civvie Slappy would not eat back in July and I was trained to buritto her and I used my magic bullet, pureed the food and used a dropper to feed. We did finally graduate to dropper without wrapping up like a buritto. Then from the dropper to the spoon and off my finger....
I finally worked in the bowl feeding. This comes from the most picky-est cat in the world and if you would have told me she would eventually eat wet, I would have never ever believed you.
I mixed tuna water with the food at first only to learn she hates tuna, but I did learn she loves sardines...so I used that juice later with the food.
This just might me something that you would want to try verses the higher carb dry.
She now will eat wet but ff chicken ONLY! No varity with her is the only way to go!

Good luck!

Hi Ohbell,

I've dropper fed before with my civvie cat, Calli, also when she wouldn't eat, no fun. I don't know if I have to do that with Racci though because she is eatineseg all the liquid from the wet food already and getting some of the mashed that she can't help getting. She's exactly the same way with no variety! She hates any change in her routine or food! Everything has to be exactly the same as she's used to. So far the only thing she'll eat when she's in the mood for it, is the Wellness canned minced turkey and only if I mash it with either chicken broth (my own) or tuna. She loves tuna and loves her dry (you're not going to believe this) Purina DM.

I never tried sardines though. I'll give that a try when I get out to the store. That will be next. We have snow now so will have to wait. She won't eat shrimp or salmon or tilapia but likes flounder. She loved my chicken but now hates it again. Go figure. The only treat she eats is Good Life so I've been using her Purina DM as treats.

Today she actually felt better though and with coaxing, ate almost her whole bowl of Wellness with tuna for breakfast as long as I gave her some dry treats! I'm sitting her on the ottoman with me where she gets tested and her meds and bringing her food and water there to feed her as I test and give meds and this way it's almost like handfeeding and she feels special. What a spoiled baby!

At least I got 2 poops yesterday and she feels good today but her #'s were still up this morning. I hope her +6 and next meal is good now. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Thanks
Melanie

do you think she would go for something else as treats? I have found that Slappy loves the frz dried lamb. She wont eat the bontia flakes, ocean white fish, deer but will eat the lamb. I am going to try the duck tomorrow. I found it in the doggie section. I put in a baggie, wrap in towel and hit with hammer to make smaller.... the things we do for our babies.
Just got thru grinding 10# of chicken w/ gizzards, liver, hearts, 1 turkey leg meat and 1 duck leg....hehehe - hands hurt like hell, but 54 babyfood jars are now in freezer and wont have to do that for a while.
They are definately worth it, but I was over it about 1/2 way thru the process!
Sure hope she will find something that she will eat. Is sooo hard with the super picky ones. My other two, Sugar Bean and Ittle Sista - will just about eat anything. Slappy, noooooo way.
Have you tried Evo? I went to a specialty cat store and they had very small bags of dry for free - trial size. Would not mind seeing if she would give me some more and send to you if you would like.
