His muscles in his rear legs and hind quarters have completely atrophied and he can no longer BM or move anywhere on his own. The disappointing part is that we put a reasonable effort into making him exercise but the second visit with the new vet today revealed he lost all the muscle he had left. We have to give him enemas on a regular basis and rigorously exercise him frequently until he can begin to get around on his own...

On the bright side of things, the new vet had initially found Chewy in a severely weakened and sickly state with a faint heart beat. Today's visit showed a strong heart and that his diabetes is FAR closer to being regulated as he is steady in the 100 range. We are in the process of switching him to canned food and I'll update periodically with his progress. His current dosage is 2ml twice a day. We can lower or increase (with careful increments) as needed since we've begun testing at home.

Thanks again to everyone who helped!

Tips and suggestions for speeding up progress are welcome!

Wonderful that you are testing. Do be cautious as you change over to wet lo carb. When we switched from dry to wet, Oliver went down 100 points overnight.

Have you tried the Methyl B12 for the neuropathy?

Yes we had already started 2-3 mg of methyl B12 daily. He's also being medicated to help his thyroid and he's getting antibiotics for an infection. We feel bad forcing the pills on him. But we know once he's better, he'll forgive us in no time.

Rather than trying to force pills down my cat I put them in a little ball of cheddar cheese - just enough to wrap around the pill but not so big that the cat has to chew a lot. I just hold them in my hand and he gobbles them down. I recall another member saying that her cat loved velveeta cheese and so she wrapped pills in it. Others also have success with pill pockets, but I think that they often break the pockets in half. On the web site www.catinfo.org there is some information about pilling cats.

Sounds like your new vet is better attuned to the needs of Chewy. Hope he continues to improve.
