Our cat Tommy is still early in recovery. Yesterday I waited for him to pee most of the day and when he finally did I didn't catch him in time. There was a little puddle in the litter box so I dipped the strip in it as quickly as I could. It was negative for ketones. Is it reliable at all to do that in litter box if there is a puddle of urine? I'm just wondering if anyone else has tried it. I will continue to try to catch some with a lid or spoon or something! Thank you everyone.

Tommy is also eating well and has a great appetite :-)

Yes, if you were able to dip it in a puddle of urine it should be a reliable test.
Great on a negative test!!
Can you enter that in the SS please?

If you are finding it hard to catch him you could scrunch up some plastic in his favourite spot in the litter box to catch the urine.
I'm glad his appetite is good. Areyou still giving him extra food?
I can't see the SS...Have you managed to get it up and running yet?
Are you testing the BG levels yet?

I have the spread sheet partially together. I think I can get it going in a few hours. I tried to do the blood sugar last night and managed to poke his ear a little bit which he was not crazy about but he didn't run away either. I didn't get enough blood to test. My DH is going to help hold him when he gets home from work and I will give it another try. Thanks for the encouragement:)

Don’t forget to give Tommy a treat every time you poke even if there is no result.
Are you warming his ear ?
What size lancet are you using ?
Size 26 or 28 is best for new members.
Keep trying. You will get there and it will become easy for you both very soon.
Tommy is a lucky boy.

The spread sheet is mostly done but where do i put ketones? Maybe add a column? We just tried to do his bg but I didn't get enough blood and he sort of jerked his head. I tried each ear. He did get some pure bite frz dried turkey before and after. I feel so bad but know we need to keep trying and will do so.
Is it possible to use some Neosporin with lidocaine first to numb the ear?
Thanks Bron and Sheila:)

You can put the ketones in the remarks column of the SS and in your thread and it’s a good idea to also put what food you are feeding in the remarks column as well so you can look back on it if needed.

Try ‘milking ‘ his ear towards where you are going to poke it, before you poke it.
You can also milk it towards the poke afterwards as well to encourage the blood flow.
His ears will grow small capillaries and you will soon find it easier.
