Cheap low carb food?

Hey guys!

So, the brand of food I have been buying has been Discontinued! I need to find the next cheapest brand and was hoping for some input. I was using Sophisticat which is petsmarts brand. I have also tried the walmart brand but cannot find large amounts at my current walmart and it is not available online.

I was paying 37 cents for 5.5 oz can...does anyone know somewhere I can get food for a similar price?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

Laura and Louie (and the rest of my parents cats!)

my understanding is that they're changing the name. .more info

I feed friskees. I usually get 5.5 oz cans for 42¢, but last week they were 53¢ at petsmart.

PetSmart changed the name of the Sophistacat to Great Choice. My local store has some in already; the ingredient list hasn't changed and the price (so far) is the same.

If you live in the Midwestern USA where they have Hy-vee grocery stores, you might check out their store brand. It's 66 cents for a 13.2 ounce can!!! I'm a newbie to this site and just changed my cats to canned food a few weeks ago so I haven't had much experience picking out foods. This food is what I fed to all the kittens I've fostered over the year while working in animal rescue and they all thrived on it, so I thought I'd give it a try. I don't know the carb content yet -- I'm going to call the company this coming week, but it should be low because it has the same ingredients in roughly the same order as many of the the other low carb foods on this site. All that's in there is turkey, meat by-products, water for processing, fish, giblets, salt and all the vitamins and minerals -- no grain or veggies. Okay, the salt isn't that good and it would be better without the fish I imagine, but my cats love it, it sounds okay from the ingredients and it's really dang cheap. And right now it's all my single mom/grad. student budget can handle so I hope the Hy-vee guys tell me it's low carb when I call this week.

Just in case it comes to this....you can contact your local Wal-Mart and ask to speak with the pet department manager. Many Wal-Mart managers will order what you want if they are darn sure you will pick it up. (Used to work at a couple of Wal-Marts part-time and saw this happen many times.)

Don't know if you have any of these handy, but if you do check with your local farm/feed stores. Out here in Nebraska we have a Tractor Supply that I was able to talk to the manager and explained that I had several cats of which 2 were diabetics, so I normally buy canned cat food by the case. Not only did they order in the cases in the flavors that I needed they also gave me a 20% discount on those cases and for every 5 cases I buy they also give me the 6th case free. This wasn't an advertised bulk discount as they normally only do it on bulk purchases of dry food, but they were willing to work out the deal for me since I purchase so much canned cat food at one time.

9 Lives is also an option. My kitties don't like it much but I think the price is around .40/can and available pretty much everywhere. It also come in 4 packs which I imagine would make it an even better price.

Just make sure you're reading the ingredient label with 9 Lives--some of their pates (like Turkey & Giblets) contain soy, which you want to avoid, but others don't and are fine to feed (like Chicken dinner).

Thank you so much for all the answers guys!!! I really appreciate it!!!! I am looking through all the options to see what will work best. :-D
