Well I still haven't gotten a drop of blood big enough to get a reading on my meter. I decided NOT to shoot today. He is still not eating normally, and he vomited bile last night. He ate most of the food I put down this morning, but I can hear his poor tummy grumbling trying to digest it. I'm going to call one of the locals that were nice enough to pm me and maybe they can help me with my ear poking skills. I hope he's going to be alright. I think I may switch him very gradually to a low- carb kibble first (I know that's not ideal, but if the wet food is what has his tummy all twisted up, then that's how it has to be), then very slowly go to wet food. Can anyone suggest a lo-carb kibble? Does anyone know the percent carb in Blue Buffalo Wilderness lie-carb kibble? It's not on those Janet and binky lists, I don't think. :-D

Re: Charlie update

i am sooooooooooo glad you have a member coming over to teach the pokey!!!!
things will fall much more into place once you master that.
well, i don't know about low carb kibble, tho' i'm sure there must be one out there.
perhaps post this question on every page from community to lantus. i'll check j$b's list too.
it is an important question. i know someone who feeds dry out of necessity and she's old timer no longer her...i'll ask her.

Re: Charlie update

Listen, the most important thing is that Charlie eats. Period. Figure out the carb thing later. If he doesn't eat, he's prone to ketones and hepatic lipidosis...complications that will make the diabetes look simple.

If he doesn't eat a couple of times a day, water down some canned food or plain meat baby food and syringe feed him. Force feed him even if he doesn't like it, and keep doing it until the insulin can work its magic.

Re: Charlie update

He is eating now. He just ate his lunch. So maybe we are back on track (as long as he keeps it down). Now I hear him scrounging in the kitchen for stuff as I type. Good thing all our cupboards are baby-proofed! I've got the info on the Blue Buffalo Wilderness kibbles and cans (20.6-22.8% carb for kibble, <1% for can.) I was hoping for less in the kibbles. I think I saw that wellness core has only 11%. Maybe we will try that. That ear poking is tricky business!!!

Re: Charlie update

Innova Evo and Wellness Core dry are the lowest that I am aware of (~8% and 11% carbs, I think)

MJ beat me to it, yep that's the word i got too! thru my expert sources on dry kibble

Re: Charlie update

When H was not eating much I tried the Core and Evo. I found the Core did raise his BGs - the EVO I had better luck with as related to the BGs. But keep in mind I only used dry as an emergency measure when he would go into food protest as I suspect was related to his various pancreatitis flares. I would call it "rebooting" his system  . Then I would get him back to the wet as soon as possible.

I am suspicious that the carb level in dry food may vary. Supposedly this site http://www.yourdiabeticcat.com/diet.html had the Evo analyzed and it's carb content was actually 13% and not 7%.

So the bottom line is that ya gotta do what ya gotta do to keep food going in them, but get to the low carb wet as soon as you can.

Re: Charlie update

Well, I am curious if you were able to draw your first blood last night.

You know it was a full moon and all.

Remember where that sweet spot is, a dab of vaseline to help puddle it, and a little firmer on the lancet....probably a 4.

You'll get!

Hey Charlie, your mommabean is well on her way to getting you to feel lots better. Those ouchies won't be too bad in a few days. ~~Attie

Re: Charlie update

Charlie started eating and acting much better yesterday, and Blue helped me test at 4pm yesterday, and his level was 555. So I fed him and shot him with 1U. There was no way I could keep to a 4 and 4 schedule, so I didn't test again till 7 this morning. I'm gonna keep him on a 7 and 7 schedule now. I got a big drop of blood on my 2nd or 3rd poke (I think maybe I flinch when I push the button so it doesn't poke in as far as it should-I'm trying to be more steady and firm with my pressure)...but then my meter turned off, so I had to pull out and replace the strip to turn it back on, and he shook! But the good news is that a big drop landed on his leg and I was able to test using that. He was high (no surprise since it had been 15 hours since his last shot) at 465, so I shot 1U while he ate his breakfast. I will test again at 7pm. I'll probably just test 2x a day until I really get the hang of it, then try to do a curve. I'm hoping to have a good curve by Monday. I'm very pleased that I'm figuring out this whole home testing thing! Maybe this won't be so bad after all...

Re: Charlie update

Fantastic! Welcome to the Vampire Club - secret handshake will arrive by mail.

If that ever happens again, get the drop on your fingernail and then test it there.

VAMPIRE

Congrats on a major step acheived in helping charlie regulate his diabetes.
i'm hopeful that # will edge it's way down.
please keep us posted regularly like every day..on his number ok?

amps 555 1U
+4 342
pmps 490 1U

this style of writing it out makes it very easy for all of us to follow his cycle.
is it self explanitory?

am=morning ps= preshot then # then dose
+4 hours since last shot.

you need never tell us the actual time as we are world wide and it won't really matter.
