Charlie has high bg and neuropathy

Greetings everyone,

Wow, has the FDMB ever changed a lot since I used to come here with my sugarcat, Tsing Yen. I lost him a few years ago, but I got so much help from here. I never could have done it alone.

Last night my neighbour, "Alexis", came over. She was upset and said something was wrong with Charlie, he couldn't walk right. My mind went immediately to neuropathy and I asked her if he was drinking a lot and she said "Yes and he pees so much his paws always have litter stuck to them.", and I said, "Yeah litter paws, my bet is diabetes". My friend, who is a diabetic, happened to be here, we all live in the same apartment building so I asked her if she would mind if we used her kit to do Charlie's bg. Charlie is only 12 years old, he does have neuropathy but not as bad as Tsing Yen when he was diagnosed and when I did Charlie's ear poke (I even got blood on my first try after all this time and I was kind of glad because Alexis was more upset than Charlie) his bg was 24.9 (x18 American) so he is diabetic. I told Alexis about FDMB and to come here. I told her I would give Charlie his insulin once a day because she works a lot, so I said I'd do his night injection and I'd do his ear pokes until she can do it. Alexis said she can't afford it. I told her insulin isn't all that expensive (but I see there have been changes), I know you can get Humulin N for $30 still and I even told her I'd buy her first box of needles and vial of insulin. I can't help her financially because I have a CRF cat, Rainy Day, but I thought if I could get her started she would see it's not so bad. We all remember our first weeks right?! And then it sort of became routine. I know Tsing Yen didn't even acknowledge his injections and I was so scared to give the first one! Someone here got me to do the ear pricks and fortunately my very first one went really well, which was good because after that I wasn't so good but I knew I could do it from the first one.

Anyway, Alexis came over later and said she's having Charlie "put down" on Friday. I told her I wish she would take him to the vet and not do it on my bg test, but she said she phoned the emergency vet and they said it sounds like diabetes and the SPCA said so too. I know she can't afford it and I know she's scared but I wish she would at least try. I was kind of mean and said, "Well, you can afford to smoke." I want her to come here and talk to all of you. Should I "bug" her or should I just leave her alone? Do you know what I would give if Rainy had been diagnosed with diabetes instead of CRF???

Best Wishes to Everyone and Peace,
Kate and Tsing Yen(GA)

What an awful situation, Kate. I am sure people everywhere do make that choice; they just aren't the ones we hear about. We hear about the ones that are willing to try to help their kitties. I am sure you know that diabetic cats are very hard to place if surrendered to a shelter. We do have a member, Venita and the Boyz, who runs a Diabetic Cats in Need group. You can find her above on this page in the stickies.

I don't know if you can, but if you could take him for a few weeks or months and at least get him regulated, or even in remission, he would be much more adoptable. We can help with supplies (newbie kit with meter and supplies) and maybe insulin. There was some insulin on the PZI forum and some in the supply closet. Not sure if it is still there, or if they would be willing to ship to you.

Hopefully others will be along with better options.

Hi Kate, long time.......any chance of getting her to hold off on the euthanasia and switching Charlie to all canned food? Sometimes, just removing all dry food can keep a kitty from needing insulin.

If your neighbor is willing to let someone else adopt him, that might be the best option. You have already offered her a lot of help.Sometimes people are just unable or unwilling to deal with a pet that has a chronic illness.hopefully this kitty will get a guardian angel!
