Hello! Looking for ideas on the least stressful way to get blood sample. Currently my husband gently restrains and holds off hind leg vein and I've been pretty successful using an insulin syringe. He tolerates it but he is starting to resent me even though he gets lots of TLC before and after. A vet I work with suggested using a lancet on his ear. I've never tried that way before and I'm wondering if anyone has an instructional video or any tips or tricks that help the procedure go smooth and as "fun" as possible? I feel like he's starting to hate me. Thanks again you guys are angels!

Welcome!

Yes, most people use the ear tips and some even use the paw pads for testing. I've only ever heard of vets using the vein. Here is a link for information on how to test and another link for some ear testing tips, including links to videos.

Please let us know how else we can help you and if you have any questions!

I test Skooter from his ear....

A lot of people on here will suggest doing it slowly....making sure you test your kitty in the same area each time....bring him over to the area, and snuggle with him, rub his ears and have him associate that with a positive feedback....I have not had to use a rice sock yet, but I will be as I want to try to get his left ear to bleed well for me.... so fill a toddler sock with dry rice and put it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds and then place it by his ear, that will help warm things up and make the blood easier to get....

Right now Skooter can't have treats, so after we test (successful or not) he gets love of love and attention.....

I try to remain as calm as I can and Skooter is getting much better at just sitting there and tolerating it....he sometimes squirms, but I notice that is when I am a bit stressed myself.

I do it solo as it is just me and Skoots....but perhaps it might help if one of you calms and soothes him while the other does the quick prick....I have also picked up the trick of using some neosporain with pain medication, which apparently helps the blood bead up better.....plus it gives a little pain relief and helps heal...

Personally, the videos I googled did not help me that much, I went into my vet's office and they showed me how to do it and then took some of the advice I have listed above from all the fine folks here and made it work for us...

I know that some of the people who have been here awhile will have links to some videos and information as well, but thought I would throw my two cents in there :)

I swore up and down that I would never home test because it scared me too much, now, if you look at Skooter's spreadsheet I am testing all the time, to the point where I have had to promise to not test as much and give his ear a break :)

Good luck in your quest to ear test!

We also use the ear. It takes a bit of practice but it really easy once you get the hang of it. We started by filling an empty prescription bottle with warm/hot water and holding it on the inside of Cobb's ear. It warmed his ear up for us. I kept it there to brace for the lancet so he didn't move his ear. Now, i just use a folded up piece of toilet paper or a cotton ball in place of the bottle. Rubbing the ears can also warm them up well.

Hi,

Here's a link to a page of pics and helpful info about 'hometesting' using the kitty's ear. (I learned to test from this page):
http://www.sugarpet.net/bloodtst.html

Testing the ear shouldn't hurt the kitty. But the unfamiliar sensations and sounds may take a short while to get used to.
If the kitty is rewarded for each test (or attempted test) with a treat or a cuddle the chances are that the kitty will soon associate the testing process with something pleasant.
My cat now comes running when I rattle the test strip vial. And I can also test him while he's dozing in his basket.
