Changed Food - BGs dropping!

So I was awake at 5am thiss morning b/c of a bouncy ball of energy lab barking up a storm... I took the chance to test Kate's BG, 332. MUCH better than 515 from last night!

I went to Petsmart today and bought the Blue Buffalo Wilderness canned foods, Purina ProPlan canned foods and FF flaked and classics. I'm starting her with the BBW since they have the least carbs. She *LOVES* them. I also picked up some of the BB treats... she also loves those. I fed her around 3:30pm and just tested her. 327! I just fed her dinner and I'm going to test her in about an hour, but I am liking these numbers!

Hopefully this will get her to an acceptable level and I can manage with just food. <fingerscrossed>

Great that your cat likes the canned food  Hopefully those numbers will drop a little more. Insulin will likely still be needed but maybe your cat will be on the of lucky ones who only need insulin for a short time

Which Blue Buffalo treats did you buy? The Kitty Yums ones have rice, potato, oatmeal, and maple syrup in them  Definitely a no-no for a diabetic cat. The Wilderness ones have ground potato which may affect blood glucose levels.

Have you seen the list of popular low carb treats? http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=9172 The Wellness Pure Delights are simillar to the Blue Buffalo treats are and diabetic-friendly.

Last I checked, Purina Pro Plan canned foods all contained wheat gluten, soy, and corn starch--all ingredients to avoid with a diabetic cat. Try the Fancy Feast Classics instead--they are all grain free and low carb (and also made by Purina). Here's the diabetic safe ones: http://www.felinediabetes.com/glutenfree.htm. Another option is the Sheba Premium Pates--these are all also low carb. Just make sure the can says "Pate" on it because their higher carb "cuts" food is in an identical looking can.

ohmygod_smile I looked at the GA and the calorie content on the Kitty Yums... Dang it! Well they are just going to have to do for tonight. It's storming and I'm not going out for different treats.

As far as the canned foods, I bought the Wilderness only... Turkey, Duck, Chicken and... Salmon. Had to think about that for a minute! They probably do have potato in them, but from the zillions of lists that I perused for days on end, they seemed the lesser of the other evils. They had the least carbs. Purina Pro Plan was on one of the losts that I looked at... I know. I did make sure to only buy the... ok, had to go to the kitchen.

And can I just get a WTF on this... ok, on the can for Chicken & Liver Entree the ingredients literally read as follows: Water sufficient for processing, Chicken liver, meat by-products, poultry giblets, artifical and natural flavors, tricalcium phosphate, guar gum, potassium chloride, taurine, salt, vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, calcium phosphate, thiamine mononitriate, Ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, vitamin A supplement, copper sulfate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, niacin, vitamin B-12 supplement, riboflavin supplement, calcium pantothenate, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of vitamin K activity), vitamin D-3 supplement, folic Acid, potassium iodide, biotin.

... Pause...

Ok, those ARE the correct ingredients for the Chicken & Liver Entree, the Turkey & Giblets has the wheat gluten and soy...
http://www.proplan.com/wet-cat-food/turkey-giblets-entree/default.aspx

Wow... my eyes hurt. I'm glad I looked twice because they were about to get a SERIOUSLY worded email about not putting the correct ingredients on the label!

The Ocean Whitefish & Salmon Entree also do not have wheat gluten or soy
http://www.proplan.com/wet-cat-food/ocean-whitefish-salmon-entree/default.aspx

The Senior Cat 11+ Chicken & Beef doesn't have wheat gluten or soy... which I don't think I remember picking out the "senior cat" food, but nonetheless.
http://www.proplan.com/senior-wet-cat-food/chicken-beef-entree/default.aspx

The Fancy Feast Flaked stuff looks pretty good too... the Fish & Shrimp Feast - Flaked has the following:
Crude Protein 17.5%
Crude Fat 2%
Crude Fiber 1.5%
Moisture 78%
Ash 3%
Taurine .05%
Ingredients: Ocean fish, fish broth, shrimp, calcium phosphate, vegetable oil, guar gum, vitamin E supplement, vitamin A supplement, sodium nitrate, zinc sulfate, thiamine mononitrate, manganese sulfate, menadione sodium bisulfate complex (source of vitamin K activity), riboflavin supplement, folic acid, pyridoxine hydrochloride, vitamin D-3 supplement.

grr_red  grr_red

Ok, looking through ALLLLLLL the foods I just bought and listed, here are the one's I found with wheat gluten and soy...
Chicken & Tuna Feast - Flaked
Salmon & Ocean Whitefish Feast - Flaked
Tuna Feast - Flaked
Tuna & Mackerel Feast - Flaked
Trout Feast - Flaked

ohmygod_smile ohmygod_smile ohmygod_smile

Darn, I thought I was doing so good too.

you are doing good - don't get angry over this. The good news - you can return the unopened cans.

Regarding Fancy Feast, the classics are all acceptable choices.

I haven't bought the flaked, so I can't comment, but the classics are all low carb and good to have.

Just like Hillary & Maui said, you are doing good. Don't beat yourself up over it. It will get easier. There are new things I learn every day (having thought I was doing the right thing before). Hugs!

The ProPlan Oceanwhitefish and Salmon one doesn't have any of those ingredients and is low carb. But since it's fish, it should't be fed all the time.
