Change Caninsulin to Lantus advice?

One of my fried want to change her suger cat's insulin from Caninsulin to Lantus, is there any information that I can get for her about changing insulin?
Due to her vet doesn't know anything about Lantus at all, she has been asked to find Lantus and change to it on her own.
I don't know how to change insulin safely, is there anyone can give some advice? That will be very helpful.

Hi Akilo,

So your friend wants to try a longer lasting insulin than the Caninsulin. That sounds good. Have her become a member here and we can advise her.

When switching from Caninsulin to Lantus, you can start the change at the next 12 hour cycle if you wanted to. Caninsulin is a shorter duration insulin so there is little to no overlap from shot to shot.

Will your friend be willing to home test?
How many units of Caninsulin is her cat getting now?
What food is she feeding?

She will need to get U-100 needles because the U-40 needles can not be used with the Lantus insulin U-100 concentration. She should try to get the syringes with 1/2 unit markings.

Yes she does home testing now.
Her cat gets 0.7u(0.0175cc) of Caninsulin and weight 11.44lb.
She feeds canned food (ZiwiPeak).
I also conform that her syringes is 3/10cc U-100.

Does she understand English well enough to follow what we are telling her? Or can use a translation program to help her understand unfamiliar terms? Or you can help her sometimes?

Will she be joining the board?

You know, we would really like to see her spreadsheet. Good to see a SS even if all the numbers are from when she has been giving the Caninsulin.

We have had other members switch from Caninsulin to Lantus. Maybe if you change the subject on your first post to Change Caninsulin to Lantus advice? you may get more good responses.

Yes I'll help her with recording numbers, but I don't think she will join here, so now I'm discuss with her that can she record numbers to me and I help her post here.
But looks like she gets some trouble with recording everyday at internet, she records with paper before. I'm still thinking how to deal with this problem.

Maybe you can set up the sheet and update it every 3 days? And keep an eye on her if she drops under 50 you let us know?

Lets get her the lantus first and we can go from there.

She started Lantus at this morning at 1u.
And her Caninsulin was 3.5u before. I'll start post her SS.

Thanks, Akilo! This will help us better help you and her. ;-) 1u is a good starting dose with Lantus. Make sure she sticks to twice daily dosing, 12 hours apart for a few days (around 5 days when first starting out) until the Lantus depot is built up...unless she gets low numbers under 50, which qualify for an automatic dose reduction.
