Cerenia for cats?

My vet refused to give me oral Cerenia today. She said the use in cats is off label and she wasn't comfortable with that.

Thoughts! I really need some-- has anyone used it with success?

The other options for nausea medications are oral or injectible Zofram (ondansetron) and injectible Anzemet (dolasetron. These are both human anti-nausea drugs used for chemotherapy patients. Quite frankly they are all off label use for cats but they are used quite often for cats with IBD and/or pancreatitis.

The oral Zofram (ondansetron) also comes in 8 mg and 4 mg pills. If I recall correctly you'd want the 4 mg pills.

Hope others come along and offer their advice as well.
 
Sorry, to answer your original question - yes, my vet gave Harley one Cerenia injection and it worked wonders for 24 hours and then wore off. :cry:
 
I have used Cerenia pills with Zoe....worked wonders! She was vomitting and had diarrhea....she got an injection of Cerenia and I came home with 4 pills (4mg each) to give her 1 per day. The injection and pills last 24 hours. While on the cerenia, Zoe's tummy calmed down and the nausea went away, she was able to eat and to keep down everything she ate.....I would try talking to your vet again.....it was almost a miracle for Zoe.
 
You can see if another vet in the same practice will prescribe it. You can't really ask your vet to rx something that she's not comfortable with using in cats -- even if you know of other people that have used it, it's her license and her conscience.
