Cerenia Expiration Question

Hi everyone,

Elmsley has been throwing up a lot of mornings right before breakfast. I have some unopened boxes of Cerenia that expired back in 2020 (from a previous cat who had CKD). Does anyone know is this more of like a "sell by" suggestion or is it too far gone to give him?

I can order some today and it would be here in a few days, however I hate to toss the meds I have if they are still good.

The why - Vet has diagnosed a "mild" but likely chronic pancreatitis. He's got diarrhea on top of the morning vomiting, so sounding more and more this is the case. His BUN is also pretty high right now (though Creatinine is good - follow-up testing in a few weeks) which could also be causing the morning vomiting, especially since 3am snacks sometimes help to prevent the morning vomiting.

I did want to try to treat the hyperacidity instead of just preventing vomiting, so I started him on 200mg 1x daily slippery elm bark about a week ago, and then upped it to twice daily (400mg total) last Thursday. Its helped a little (he's not over drinking before vomiting to try to dilute the acid any longer and the diarrhea has firmed a bit but still real loose - both a "win" when it comes to cleaning it up) but hasn't stopped either yet.

Sorry, forgot to mention that in the middle of all this I also moved Elmsley off Fancy Feast and onto the lower phosphorus Weruva BFF and Soulistics wet foods.

Nothing like muddying the waters. :)

You can and should also try ondansetron as they work differently. You can get ondansetron at any human pharmacy. I’m not sure about Cerenia, but I would give my cats an anti anxiety pill during 4th of July and it still seemed to work up until 3 years after the expiration date. The issue is that meds past their exp date can start work at less than 100% potency. Are you giving anything for the diarreah?
