Hi All,

My Pudge was in remission off ProZinc since mid-2012. He's 13 y/o, was 18 lbs now 15 lbs, diagnosed Dec. 2011. About a month ago, he got terrible diarrhea, stopped eating & drinking & peeing; though, I syringed food & water, I knew he wasn't getting sufficient calories. Finally, I gave him a few pieces of dry kitten food. He ate those! Took a swallow of water! Licked his paw & wiped his face. Next, he looked for more dry kitten food! Naturally enough, he got more. After 2 days on dry kitten food (wouldn't have moist or baby food), his BG was 252! Put back on wet FF chicken or turkey classics, his BG went to below 100, but after eating it stood at 155.

Since I had Levemir flexpens available, I used one hoping for a new & speedy remission! Well, it might be happening as he's been off insulin for 81 hours & his BGs have been in the greens except for one 111 & one scary dip into 40s (that never scared me on ProZinc - it's the shed!). I realize that he's both very carb, as well as, amount eaten at one sitting sensitive. He's very morose on Levemir (I do check for ketones) so I am hoping to get him off it soon! We'll see. Pudge has turned out to be a grazer. I never withhold food except the 2 hours before injections.

The reason for my writing about Pudge's experience is to emphasize how seriously dry food or change to wet can affect BGs. Please be cautious when changing dry food to wet, as BGs can really plummet. The best thing to do would be to change dry to wet food before starting insulin.

Carl, it was lovely to hear from you! Glad Bob is doing so well. Many thanks to you & all the lovely people on this board who helped us so much over so many months. Please be assured that if I don't respond quickly, I'm in another fight with my computer!!!

All my best,
Sophie

Hello Robin,

thanks for all those sliding scales! While I groaned & grumbled, Pudge certainly loved to pick up all those lovely multi-hued BG tiles! The more varied in color, the better he seemed to like them! He surprised me when he went into remission on 1 unit. I just wanted to add that a box of dry kitten food is now part of my Pudge hypo/emergency kit.

Best wishes,
Sophie
