Hi! I was happy that Rudy was starting to eat canned food a little. Last night I put some crushed dry food on top of 1 ounce of canned. He gobbled it up while purring! I was so happy- until 10 minutes later he threw it ALL up! :-( Then about an hour after that my husband found something on our bedroom floor. It was almost all the way clear, lke water, smelled sweet, and only had a few faint traces of food. it was definatly throw up (at first we thought it was pee). It took several paper towels to soak up the liquid, there was quite a lot there.

Two hours after that he was so hungry and ate 1/4 cup of dry food and kept that down all night.

Looking for thoughts as to the cause of this?

My cat throws up if he eats too quickly and it smells and looks like you describe.

If it's only happened once, probably nothing to worry about. If it keeps happening, call your vet. Better safe than sorry.

Hope this helps.

that does sound like a scarf and barf....

It sounds like you might be trying to transition to wet food.
Perhaps a smaller serving.... with time intervals in between.
Diabetic cats need small frequent meals.

Another thing to try is to spread the food out on a plate so he has to eat slower. No chance of a hairball? That is when I see the food coming back up.

Hi Karen,

I think some cats may be more sensitive to food changes than others. Are you just at the beginning of the transition? If yes, then maybe if you transition more slowly that might help. For example, give 1 conservative tsp along with the dry for a few days, then 2 tsps, then 3 tsps, etc. etc., until the transition is complete.

I agree with what everyone has already said. I think that wet food tends to be more bulky than dry so if you put down a large amount and they eat it too fast they can just regurgitate it. As others have said smaller amounts spread over the course of the day is perhaps better and to transition slowly from dry to wet.

Best wishes

Sarah

Thank you all :-) Once again you save the day!

I am trying to transition him to wet food, and I will back off a bit now. I put some out yesterday and he wouldn't touch it. Maybe he's mad after getting so sick after it yesterday. Regroup and start over I guess...does this ever get easier? lol

Hi Karen,

It might help to try a different flavour with Rudy. I found that Saoirse did better with fairly bland foods (chicken/poultry recipes in jelly). It's tough at the beginning but once you get the right food it makes a big difference.
