lately my cats have taken to playing in their cat litter. they knock the litter out of their box along with any feces, and then start knocking their feces around the floor. can anyone give me advice on how to stop this. I don't want to spray them when they are in their box because i don't want them to associate litter boxes with punishment.

any advice

Divert them - grab a toy and get them playing elsewhere.

Reward them for going to a different location with a low carb treat.

Also, tire them out with active play of 15-20 minutes morning and night.

LOL!!!! Yep more toys. Go to a dollar store and pick up a selection and give them one new toy a week.

Or try the food game - my guys love this.
Get a treat (low carb of course :) ) and stand /sit at the end of a hallway. Hard floor is better than carpet but it doesnt matter.
Get the cat(s) to come to you then throw/slide the treat fast and as far as you can along the surface of the floor. (you might need to wiggle it about first to get them wound up).
They will chase it and eat it.
Then make sure they walk back to you (if you can) before throwing the next one. If its two cats, then stand in the middle of the the hall with two treats and throw each treat a different direction so they arent competing.
Repeat until tired.

thanks any more advice they are usually playing in there at around 5 AM. don't know about you guys but i am usualy to tired to do any thing that early. so i yell and they stop but they start again 5 min later and when i yell again they don't stop.

thanks in advance
