Cats drinking TOO much water?

I have 2 kittens, each 8 months old. Male is 8.5 lbs (0.61 stones), female 6.5 lbs (0.464 stones).

Between them, they drink 24 ounces of water per day. This seems excessive. I'm wondering if I need to take them to a vet?

Here are the details:

  • ● I feed them a combination of dry and wet food
    ● Dry food is grain free and very low carbohydrates, 7% carbs
    ● Wet food is also grain free
    ● They drink water out of a fountain. They love the running water, always have.
    ● They always drank a lot of water but never this much
    ● Frequent urination
    ● Urine looks normal
    ● Kittens seem perfectly healthy, active
    ● No problems with appetite, their appetite seems normal

Personally I don't see a problem with them other than they drink 24 ounces of water per day between them. From what I have read, the average seems to be 1 ounce per pound of body weight, so they should be drinking 15 ounces per day. I give them only bottled water through the fountain. I personally am on a low carb diet myself and have lost a lot of weight. I know from experience that I am supposed to drink lots of water and I urinate more on low carb than when I was eating carbs.

Does anyone have any suggestions/experiences with cats that drink a lot of water but are perfectly healthy? Or do you think I should take them to a vet to find out why they seem to drink and urinate frequently?

My guess is the dry food is causing the additional water consumption. No matter the quality of dry, it's still dry and well not a popular food choice.

Of course, with kittens, I've heard that you want them to understand and eat both dry and wet, so if ever there is a time when feeding is an issue, they know that this is food.

It's possible this is all quite normal. But if you really are concerned, you may want to get an overall check up for them - kidneys, thyroid, etc. just to make sure everything is working as it should.

I know with my cats, I add lots of water to their wet food and the LB is always filled and they can pee a lake at one time.

I'm not sure. Have you checked their blood sugar levels? My kitties eat all wet food with a little water added in and they no longer drink out of a water bowl at all, even my kitty with kidney disease.

I think I would get them checked out just to be safe.
