Cat with cancer

Feline diabetes helped my Milo go off the juice 15 months ago and he is wonderful and it great health.

I am hoping people might have some insight or questions to ask for my parents. Their kitty...guess technically Milo's Uncle Follow was diagnosed with cancer. His liver numbers and platelet numbers are not good. I don't have exact figures. Follow is 9 years old and is not eating much now and is sleeping lots. He is not in pain because as soon as he shows any symptoms of suffering my parents will do the right thing so he does not suffer.

Does anyone have advice for someone caring for a cat with cancer? Any food suggestions that might spike his interest in eating? Any specific questions to ask the vet?

The hard thing is they are in Arizona and coming to Indiana to visit here for a week so my sister will look after their kitty. It is so hard knowing how attached my parents are to their baby to know they will be worried about him when they come. I would suggest them bringing him here but know that stress of flying wouldn't be good.

THANKS!!!

There are many different treatment options depending on the type of cancer and how far it has progressed. Has their vet not given them some options???

A low carb diet may be helpful during cancer. Cancer cells feed off glucose.

Warming up the food to increase the smell may help.

A bit of play before a meal may encourage eating.

There are some meds to increase appetite.

Prednisone is often used as a palliative medicine.

Chemo can be pretty tough on a cat, though each cat is different.

And partway down in this post is a long list of ways to encourage eating

Thanks for the info. They don't know the type of cancer as that would involve more testing and they are on a limited income. The vet did them 'critical care' food. They have a syringe to put the stuff in and when they gave it to him he loved it.

I will read the post and also talk to them about warming other foods up. Appreciate the help and info!!!!

Just curios how the diagnosed the problem as due to cancer. There are many different types of cancer and the treatment varies, including palliative care. Blood tests are a poor indicator of cancer. Your parents should be able to get more information about how the vet diagnosed the cancer and the type of cancer.

Not long ago I fostered this beautiful sweet wonderful 10 year old kitty named Shiva. All she wanted to do was please me and to give and get love. She had stomache cancer (unbeknown) to us when the owners released her to us. We noticed she was loosing a lot of weight and we took her to the vets. It took us a long time to find out what was causing her not to eat and to loose weight. I was trying everything I could think of to help her. Lots and lots of various meds... for the food I gave her either Cat Sure or Clinicare. This is a liquid that is high in calories. She liked the stuff and she wanted to please me. This is what I gave her until her final days. It broke my heart because we didn't know she had cancer until it was just too late. I just hope that she felt love and happiness before she had to go away.
