Cat Weight Loss During Remission

Hey y'all. We've been enjoying remission the last few months! I'm just trying to understand what normal weight loss looks like for a cat in this period. Corv was diagnosed in August 2025 and was around 14-14.5 pounds (He was def over eating.). After his diagnosis I put him on 3 cans of ff for a month where he lost about .5 lb, then down to 2.5 cans of ff since then. So he's been on 2.5 cans since September of 2025. The last time I weighed him was in November and he was 13.6 lbs. I just weighed him again and he's at 12.4 lbs. Is this a reason to take him in or can I watch his weight every couple days for the next month to see? I have his weight in my spreadsheet and I will say he was pretty consistently 13.6 lbs from September through November.

Hmm. So he’s down 1.2 lbs in like 1.5 or 2 months. That doesn’t raise any alarm bells in my head, but like you I’d be curious as to why. Has he been cleaning up all the food all the time? When’s the last time you had him in for blood work? Maybe there would be a clue in there.

I don’t know what ideal weight loss rate is though so hopefully someone else weighs in (yikes).

A higher protein diet can be a reason for weight loss. The big question is whether your cat is underweight. If so, try upping the calories. Feed more or use a food that is low in carbs but higher in calories. Just out of curiosity, why did you reduce the amount of food from 3 to 2.5 cans?

The section of Dr. Lisa's webpage on obesity gives this formula for calories: Required calories per day = [13.6 X optimal lean body weight in pounds] + 70

I changed it from 3 to 2.5 because he wasn't eating all his food! He eats all of his 2.5 cans now. I give him 1 can in the morning, 0.5 in the afternoon and 1 can at night. He doesn't seem hungry until the hour before he's supposed to eat and then he does start acting hungry.

Also the vet did say she wanted him down around 12 pounds. I last had him in for bloodwork in August and I"ll be taking him back in May as long as nothing crazy comes up! I was just concerned because he was so stable at 13.6 for so long.

I'll probably just keep an eye on it for the next month or so?
