Hi Everyone,

I was curious about some over the counter pet stress remedies. I think it could help Cali be a little calmer when the pet sitter comes around, especially when she has to get a shot. Tuckers Mom saw it first hand this past weekend--she seems to have gotten so much worse over the past few weeks, given us going away over Thanksgiving.

I saw this at Whole Foods: http://www.onlynaturalpet.com/products/ ... der-238000

Has anyone had any small success with a product? I'm pretty desperate!

Cali was the perfect kitty... okay, maybe not. But I do think the switch to the smaller needles will help and food more often will help.

I use Rescue Remedy for me and my cat. For me only when I know I'm going to be super stressed, but for Lilly Grace she gets a drop rubbed into her ear before a storm. During the time I'm pet sitting you could put the RR in her water, that would help her. I don't think I'll get near her ear to do that for you.

The Feliway diffusers we talked about are good also.

I was wondering if while you're away a box might help her. My cats love card board boxes, I thought maybe Cali could have one that she could hide in, that way she can feel protected.

Have you tried Feliway? http://www.feliway.com/us

I'm planning to get some for Mookie. It can be used in a room diffuser, which makes me more comfortable than having him ingest something new when I'm trying to regulate his body chemistry. He also loves having lots of hiding places (including boxes), so I make little nests for him in different places in the house.

Composure seems to work for Beauregard when he's in stressful situations. I haven't used it since I found out he's a diabetic so one should be sure to find out if there is any reason it shouldn't be used for diabetic kitties.

Tuckers Mom--I'm so nervous, I'll try anything. I think I'll pop on down to WF and pick some up.

We can try to leave a box out, but I don't think she'll have any issues with hiding places, much to your dismay.

Might try Feliway as well--why not. Does anyone see any concerns with doing too many? I don't want a doped up kitty.

I'd just try one new thing at a time and see if it works for you and Cali. You may not need both. If one doesn't work, try something else.

Becky, if it's okay with you I may bring my sister to help me. Just in case I need help with the shot. Although she may prefer my husband, Cali does seem to have a thing for your husband :)

My sister lives even closer to you, I can bring her by before if you'd like to meet her.

No problem, just please be careful (that's for yourselves, not Cali!). If she doesn't want it, she doesn't want it :(

Of course, at least we know she'll be fed and litter will be cleaned. If I can dose her, a reduced dose may be better since we can't monitor her. But we'll see how she's feeling. I'll bring the laser toy she liked and lots more treats.

Feliway and other items like it are not really a drug. It's more like aromatherapy. Feliway use feline pheromones to help calm a cat. Rescue Remedy uses floral essence to help calm. I use both - the Feliway diffuser is plugged in all the time to try to keep Erik from attacking and biting Emme. I use the Rescue Remedy when strangers will be in the house and scare them.

From Feliway's website: "Feliway is a synthetic copy of the feline facial pheromone, used by cats to mark their territory as safe and secure. By mimicking the cat’s natural facial pheromones, Feliway® creates a state of familiarity and security in the cat's local environment. As a result, Feliway can be used to help comfort and reassure cats while they cope with a challenging situation and help prevent or reduce the stress caused by a change in their environment."

And don't forget she'll pick up on your anxiety, so TRY to stay calm, OK?

Thanks! We gave her her first sampling of the Rescue Remedy tonight and she is lounging on the couch. My mother is coming for dinner and Cali had a bad run in with her over Thanksgiving, so that will be an interesting test.
