Hi - naturally it is evening and I am out of strips to test, so here is my dilemma. My diabetic cat has been off insulin for about 9 months now and doing well in general. Tonight, he made off with a bag of about a dozen corn bread muffins (lots of corn, sugar, grain flours) and the bag was empty when I found it in the hallway. I don't know how much he may have eaten or if he had some help from the dog. I can't test him tonight as the stores are all closed. What should I watch for in the way of behavior? How serious do any of you think this is? I have worked so hard to keep him healthy, now I fear he could have trouble again. He has been on Fancy Feast (no grain) food for a week and for the 9 months prior, he was on prescription MD. Has this happened to anyone there and can they advise me as to any action I should take? Thanks.

The dose makes the poison.

He may have trouble with it. Or you may luck out.

Monitor for physical signs of hyperglycemia/DKA.

Drinking a lot; peeing a lot. etc.

Anything aberrant.

If he's still up and about and behaving normally, its not an emergency.
If he's unconscious or seizuring, obviously it is.
Anything in between - if what you see concerns you, take him in to an emergency vet.

Should I try giving him some protein, like chicken or something to counteract the carbs?

Re: Cat OTJ but just ate bunch of muffins - will he be intro

Chris, I'm not sure I would feed him unless he acts hungry. I'm having a hard time imagining he could eat one entire muffin much less an entire bag. I would guess the dog ate most of the food.

I watch my cat eat and it just isn't that much food at one time. If I give her a bit of a donut, she eats a little - but it doesn't amount to much - maybe 1/10th?

So, unless your cat is a garbage disposal, you should be okay. Check his glucose if you are worried but just watch for any issues - probably litterbox is your biggest concern.

Next time, put the muffins in the freezer! :)

Good luck,
Pam

Thanks - lesson learned regarding the muffins. He was just so darn fast and sneaky, the silly little cat! I have been watching him this evening and he is grouchy, but otherwise not acting weird. No extra trips to the litter box. Tomorrow I will get to the store and get some new strips for testing and see what is going on. Thanks all - I will hopefully sleep a little tonight.

Re: Cat OTJ but just ate bunch of muffins - will he be intro

Just an update - I think my dog ate most of the muffins as he was throwing up corn meal all morning. My cat got the bag down from the counter and must have hightailed it to the back of the house where he and the dog partied on muffins. Both are sleeping soundly today and the dog isn't eating but the cat ate breakfast, so I think my cat is ok. It is nice to know, though, that whenever we face a potential crisis that others are there to help out. Thanks.

I'm thinking your bigger problem is your sweet babies have formed an unholy union.
