Cat in Remission seasonal spike?

My little guy was diagnosed as diabetic at the beginning of the year, but as he's young (5 years) and with an immediate change to the all-pate diet, he seemed to be ok that the veterinarian did not think insulin was needed.

He's become much hungrier this past month, similar, I guess, to how he behaved a year ago when he gorged on dry food. However, I've been feeding him every 4 hours, thought lately, he's been bugging me closer to every 3 hours. I accidentally fed him an Indoor Cat Chicken with Garden Greens can, thinking it was a regular Chicken Pate can, not realizing the carbs on it is much higher than the classic Pates and today he's been urinating at intervals of 4 hours today.

I don't have a blood sugar meter, but it's clear from previous behaviour he's currently likely to have a high rating, at least as of today.

I guess my question is:

Now that Indoor Cat can is done, how long would it normally take for his levels to decrease, or how long should I wait till I get worried?

I see other people on this board talk about similar behaviour of a cat in remission still acting hungry. I usually feed half a can, so earlier this year, he'd only get hungry around 5-hour intervals. If he's going to be hungry every three hours, would it be better to feed him smaller portions or keep him at half a can?

He was a large guy when I got him (22 lbs), but he's definitely lost weight and is closer to 16-17 lbs right now so I can't tell if the increased hunger is due to diabetes coming back or just him feeling the weight loss. I hope that helps for educated guesses.

I don't have easy access to transportation to take to a vet, so I want to make sure I am giving enough time and making whatever adjustments needed before I take him.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

It will take probably a day for the higher carb food to get out of the system.
I would recommend you buy a human meter and learn to test the BGs which you can check every month to see he has remained in remission. If the BGs are higher than normal you will need to test more often and may need to start insulin.
If you live in the US you can buy a ReliOn Premier meter for $9 and 100 test strips for $17.88
You will also need a box of 100 lancets …get size 26 or 28
It is possible he might need some insulin now. The only way to find out is to test the blood glucose.

How much food are you feeding him over the day?
We recommend feeding cats several snacks during the day as well as the 2 main meals.

I feed him half a 5.5oz can, every 4-5 hours during spring summer, right now he is every 4 hours on the nose, with him trying to feed him sooner than that.

So 4 to 5 times, but he's now about 6 times every 24 hours.

A diabetic friend is going to be giving me her old meter and test strips.

Oh, and I'm from Canada.
