About this time 2 years ago, my 7-year-old cat Jack was diagnosed with diabetes. His fasting glucose was upwards of 430.
He was put on 1 unit of Prozinc twice daily, and I slowly switched him over to primarily wet food. It was quite an adventure, to say the least - lots of drama, both feline and human. Eventually he stabilized and got used to the shots, and was doing really well on the Prozinc.
Last December, Jack had a mild hypoglycemic episode. After being monitored at the vet's, they advised a break in the insulin treatments. Jack was tested periodically after that, but his blood sugar never rose back to diabetic levels. After a month of frequent testing and no insulin, the vet declared him in remission.
This week, we had a follow-up and a glucose test at the vet's *after* he'd eaten his breakfast. His blood glucose was 116. He's still on the same food/meal regimen, and of course we will continue to monitor his levels and watch for any signs, but for now he seems good!
I haven't posted much, but just wanted to thank everyone here for posting their stories, their information, their links. The cat food charts were invaluable! I learned so much from you all, and thank you so much for your help!
