We switched to Wellness chicken and Wellness turkey in January. Once we made the switch, everyone got really soft fur after eating that a few weeks. Now one of my cats (not the one who was diabetic) has some thin spots in her fur. Not bald, but just thin. The spots are on her lower arms and around her waist area. When I rub her,the fur is not as soft as it was when we changed food but it also is not as course as it was before we changed food. I was wondering if it might be the food or something else. Any ideas? Thanks

How can I tell if it is hyperthyroid and how do you treat?

I thought Wellness had the types of ingredients that were not the typical things cats were allergic to. Anyone have an issue with Wellness and allergies?

To test for hyperthyroidism you need the T4 blood test and may need the free T4 blood test. Treatment can me either oral/transdermal meds or iodine 131 treatment. Surgery is also an option.

My first thought is over grooming in those areas. Oscar has now progressed to having bald spots on the inside of his front arms because of excessive licking. Medically, he is fine though. All thyroid tests came back normal. Watch her behavior and see if she tends to lick there a lot.

Maybe switch foods for just her to see if it goes away? I'm dealing with the same thing w/ my Kami.. her front arms are nearly hairless from her overgrooming herself. They thought it was stress at first, but now they're thinking it's food allergies. So I'm feeding only her Nature's Variety frozen raw.. and the rest of them get the wet Friskies. Worth a try? (course, it may be worth testing the thyroid first, as it takes at least a month for the food thing to try!)

She does groom a good bit. She has been the worst one out of four with hairballs. I wonder what the allergy could be since we only feed chicken and turkey from Wellness. All the food they get are past the dates for the recall.
