Hi, all! Right now I am feeding VeRus Beef to my crew and all are doing really well on it, but it is a little pricey! I found Hound & Gatos for less, and the reviews look good, but I'd rather have first-hand info, if anybody has tried it? They also have more varieties that my IBD baby can eat. Some of it looks to be awfully high in phosphorus, tho'.

Anyway, all information is welcomed! Thanks!

is it juicy at all ? extra moist?
I just ordered all the ziwi flavors--
I have come to accept that all of my cabinets are filled with cat food:confused:
Never tried the hounds but curious....
I like the 3 oz cans-

Lol! Let me know what you think of the Ziwi-they're awfully $$, though. Honestly, I'm losing my mind over cat food. :arghh: Everybody seems to be doing really well on the Verus, but it's definitely way $$! Squallie does well on Merrick chicken but Candy can't have chicken...she loves the Party Animal you sent but it's too high in carbs for Squall...it just never ends! Half my income goes out the door on cat food lately! :arghh: And them there's all the unopened cans of stuff nobody will eat anymore... Yup, losing my mind.

@Squalliesmom I use Hound & Gato Chicken, I have 8 cats and it is a favorite for 2 of them, others will nibble at it. They use to love the rabbit but they changed the formula not so much rabbit in it anymore, now none of my kitties will touch it. I tried other flavors but did not have much luck with them, finicky cats :D But the chicken is now a staple in the house. What I really like about them of course is the ingredients but the consistence of the product, always the same. You don't get one case soupy and the next pasty. It has a lot of moisture in it, not runny in the can though, just right actually. And if you heat it a small amount it softens even more and brings the smell out, which by the way is very good for a pate cat food. I also use Merrick limited ingredient (Turkey & Chicken flavor), its a good food, low carb and everyone eats it. My problem with them is Purina bought them out and they are having consistency issues, every case is different. This last case of chicken is soupy, and the Turkey is really pasty, next batch might be perfect, you just never know until you open the can, but the still eat it so that is what matters.

I tried the Ziwi (venison) and only one of mine would eat it, she is still very wild. I too end up with lots of unopened cans, and have started donating them to local shelters if I can't return to the store.

Good luck in food dance, try not to bang your head against the wall to much.:banghead:

Thank you for the information! I was going to try the Hound & Gatos beef or pork, but maybe I'll just buy one can and see how it goes. My guys all love chicken but my IBD baby can't eat it ( all mine eat the same food, it's too insane at feeding time to try to make sure everybody gets exactly their own and doesn't pilfer from others' dishes!). I also considered the Ziwi venison but it's too $$ for me to feed regularly. I bought a couple of cans of Merrick beef, but I'm concerned about Squallie with the carbs in it, he's so incredibly carb-sensitive! I wanted to try Wellness, but it's mostly all chicken and fish. So far everybody is really doing very well on the VeRUS beef but again, kinda $$ for four cats. I don't know, I just seem to be cat food-obsessed lately *sigh*. It's so hard to find one that everybody likes, all can eat, and fits my never-big-enough budget, lol!

I am also looking at the Wellness Core Beef, Venison, and Lamb. It's 5% carbs, which may or may not raise Squall's BG, but the phosphorus is only 171 and it's a little higher in calories - which he needs. I might pick up a can to try, if I can find it anywhere locally.

This is one of the foods in Bandit and Orpheus's rotation. We order by the case via Amazon because it's cheaper than the store, but if you need to pick up a few cans to try out, most of the chain stores carry it. Petsmart had it on sale not too long ago (making it the same price as the Agway). They have a store finder on their website, if that helps!

I can't feed beef, as much as I would like to have it in rotation, they like it unfortunately a couple of them throw it right back up. If you can pick up a can locally to try the different flavors, that is the best way to do it. Frodo is pretty sensitive to carbs also, that is why I switched to the Merrick Limited Ingredient, it is lower in carb than the regular Merrick Pate and it does not contain carrageenan, which can upset some kitties and humans digestion. Also they offer Duck in the limited ingredient if you need a novel protein, and the price tag doesn't sting as much with the Merrick. Hard to feed different foods if they like what is down to eat. I keep everything under 5% carb so if Frodo and now Pippin (adopted him about a month ago from vet, no one wanted a diabetic 9 year old, oh well their loss our gain), get into it I don't have to worry. Pippin eats pretty much anything, Frodo is very picky and even more so since he was diagnose with HCM and congestive heart failure. I wasn't fond of all the vegetables in Wellness, even though that was the first food I went to from dry food, but moved on from there.

I understand the food obsession, I drive my husband crazy looking for different foods. He swears they eat better than he does.. LOL. So far the Merrick Limited is holding steady for them all, the 2 that eat Hound & Gato and every now and then I through in Fancy Feast Turkey & Giblets or Kitten Turkey to break the monotony, along with Tiki Cat chicken.

There was another brand I tried you might want to look at Wild Calling, they have several novel proteins and very low carb. Rated very well on Chewy. I might have to give them a try again myself :) come to think of it. I would like a different protein, and duck is hit or miss one day to the next, but they do have Buffalo, so maybe.. who knows..

Lol, funny that you should mention Wild Calling, I was just looking at them, too! Figured I might try to pick up a few cans of that to try, as well.

My kids say the cats eat better than they do and, as much as I'm embarrassed to say it, I probably do spend more per month on cat food than I do on groceries!:oops:

I think there's only a couple flavors of Wild Calling low in phosphorus, if you're watching that. I posted the nutrition info in this thread. A few years ago they were all ridiculously high in phosphorus (and ash), but it looks like they've changed their formula since then. If you feed it I would keep an eye on their ash content, because it looks like their formula changes on occasion.

Hi Nancey, do you know what the phos level and carb breakdown is on these or do you have more a updated list that shows them? I don't see these recipes on the food list I use (the 2012 one). I'm currently using FF Classic at shot times and Ziwipeak for the in betweens but am always looking for new options without carrageenan. Thank you!:)

The pet store that I get Shoes' food from just got the Wild Calling in as well as a brand called Evangers Super Premium. I bought a can of the Rabbit Burrow Wild Calling and 3 varieties of the Evangers but have not tried any yet. Waiting until Shoes gets better regulated and will probably only try a teaspoonful at a time. Shoes definitely eats way better than I do! I tried a can of Cocolicious Turkey and Chicken but he wouldn't touch it. He was not feeling well so that may have affected his taste so will give it a try another time. It is all organic if anyone is into the organic stuff. He mostly eats Merrick Purrfectly Bistro pates, Wellness, and Weruva along with a little bit of FF Classic.

Jayla, I noticed in your SS that you give 8% carb. Would you mind to tell me what food this is? I want to give Shoes a higher carb at time when I think he is going to drop quickly and the only thing that I have found is Friskie's and a few of the FF's. I did give him some of the FF Chicken & Tuna and I think it upset his tummy. Not sure about the Friskies yet. It may have upset his tummy a little too last weekend.

Thanks.

As you can see he got the lower carb this morning!!:eek: fell of the surf board!

I give the flaked fancy feast -- I was told it is not grain free but Dre is ok with that-

He likes the flaked tuna9%
flaked trout 7%
flaked tuna and mackerel 9%
flaked salmon and whitefish 8%
flaked chicken and tuna feast 8%
chunky chopped grill feast 7% -- he hates chicken and turkey
good luck:cat:

I definitely relate to this all - Murphy has IBD and I think too much fat flares his pancreatitis and is a terrible eater. He won't eat anything for more than a few meals in a row - Due to the IBD, I won't feed anything with carrageenan and try to avoid all the gums - that limits him to just a few brands - tiki cat, Nature's Logic, Nature's variety, ZiwiPeak are the ones I mostly use. Nature's Logic is a very good brand I believe but quite expensive. Just fed a pro plan true nature grain free chicken last night which he likes but it has a gum so can't use it often, I am going to order a new food I've just seen from Only Natural Pet- power pate - it's high in calories which is good for a poor eater. Don't know the carb content though - so many of these foods have so many veggies in them - which I don't like. While I know it's a no-no, I first feed Murphy some kibble - Evo, Young Again, Epigen 90, or I really love Waggers - it's semi moist and no starch or grain - - other wise he'd never get enough calories. He seems to suck all the moisture out of the wet food, and then leaves the food as tiny pieces of completely dried out pate. Does any other cat do that?

Lol, mine do this, too. I add a couple of spoonfuls of water to their meals to make a thick soupy kind of thing for them and they suck up all the moisture and leave behind this weird, pale kind of dried-out mush!

Same story here when I had Saoirse on a paté-style food.

How about Sheba cat food? Anybody have information on the carbs and other nutritional values for it?

The pates are all ok to feed diabetics, but I would avoid the "cuts" line because they include an unidentified "starch".

Keep in mind that the phosphorus is also 274 mg/100 kcal, so they are better in that department than most of the classic Fancy Feast, but you still might want to feed a different food if you're looking for something lower in phosphorus for a senior kitty.
