For the last couple of weeks Baxter has been going out back to eat grass. This is happening every day. We have St. Augstine grass. He have one tiny clump of grass that doesn't look like St. Augustine & he prefers to graze on that.
Only on 2 different occasions that I know of has he thrown up after eating grass. It was just the grass & liquid.

I am starting to wonder if I should be concerned about his cow like behavior.

Is he eating grass because he doesn't feel good? He really started doing this since I started feeding him Before Grain turkey. We did have problems with the B4 Grain beef.
Is his body craving something his food is lacking?
Is this something I should really be concerned about?
Is he sick & need to go to the vet?

Thank you,

Simba always wants to eat plants and grass to puke when he feels sick and vomits.
In Simba's case it is often liver and pancrea-related vomitting.

Thanks for your suggestions.
I have looked all over the Internet & came up with the same answer...nobody really knows. I spent one whole afternoon last week searching for a answer.

I'm leaning towards it might be the food. He started about 1.5 weeks after starting the B4 Grain. So it's been going on almost a month of eating grass. He does look like he has lost weight. No vomiting or diaheria.

Maybe I'm on the food search again. :-x

Scooter loves to munch on grass... I grow oat grass in a little pot for him. It hasn't made him vomit though.

Where did you get it from? Can you let me know?
I saw some grass at Petco, but I wasn't to sure about it. It's sitting in the elements. People walk by it, cough, sneeze...it just seemed people germed infested to me.

I get the seeds for about $1 at Walmart. I soak them in some water for about 6 hours, scatter them in some soil, and the bury them about half an inch of soil, cover the pot with plastic wrap, and set them in a low light area for a few days to germinate. Then once they start sprouting I take the plastic off and move it into the light and water it lots until its grown enough for Scooter to munch on. When he's munched it down pretty good I stick it back into the window and let it grow out more. Works great but it doesn't last forever, I replant every few months.

Pet stores sell cat grass kits, live plants, and seeds. It's really easy to grow directly from seed and it's cheaper than buying a kit. Just fill a sturdy non-tippable/non-breakable pot with non-fertilizer containing potting soil, sprinkle seeds on top and cover lightly with soil, water, and wait a few days for the seeds to sprout  Wait for the grass to be a few inches tall before letting your cat munch on it.

Catnip is easy to grow from seed, too. I start picking off leaves when the plants are a couple inches high and that seems to encourage the plants to grow bigger. You can feed the cats the fresh leaves or dry the leaves for later use.

Oh wow...I can do that! Ry thanks for the picture.

Thank you for the other ideas too!

I need to get some needs & get to planting.

Another trick if you live near a large animal feed store is to go ask them for a handful of whole oats, (like you feed to horses) they will usually give you a handful for free, just soak those in water overnight and plant...same stuff as in the cat grass kits. :-D

I use to grow them for my cats all the time when I still had my horses and the cats loved them.

Thank you for the suggestion. The training riding stables (sorry cant think of the technical name) are right by my house. Maybe I should drop by & get some whole oats from them.

Dear Jen & Bax,
My Bean goes out everyday & eats grass...sometimes she keeps it down - most of the time, but sometimes it comes back up...still dont know why or what kinds of grass that could make a difference.

Be careful with outdoor grsss (ie lawn grass). It may be contaminated with fertilizers and other chemicals, animal excrement, bacteria, mold, etc.

I've heard that the type of grasses used in lawns have a sharper blade that can irratate a cat's stomach. Cat safe grasses (barely, oat, wheat) are supposedly blunter and safer.
