Tried otj trial this weekend. Was ready to shoot the new .4u at.3am when Casd surprised me.
+48 184
+54 170
+60 234

Now I don't know where to go from here. These are still diabetic.numbers but better.than.he was getting on insulin. Hoping that 234 was a fluke (he's been after.my food all day). Due for another check in an hour & a half (9 eastern) and a shot (if.needed).6.hours.later. Help, please!

Re: Cassie 12/11 advice.please!

okay, so you are thinking shooting both at 9PM and then again at 3AM? Just so I understand your plan...

Re: Cassie 12/11 advice.please!

okay, now I get it.
well, test at 9 and we can see what Cass thinks. Then we'll figure out tomorrow AM. And tomorrow, you won't be around because of finals, right?

Re: Cassie 12/11 advice.please!

+66 246

So he's staying up (for.now). I can definitely get a +4 and probably a +6 tomorrow unless I get swamped with pre-exam.questions, but they'll be quick in & out tests and I won't be around. What I don't get is that he's showing better numbers without insulin. I'm willing to play wait amd see if we decide.not to shoot. I should be able to get a ketone test soon (fresh litter).

Re: Cassie 12/11 advice.please!

Are you checking for ketones? I looked, but didn't see evidence of it since the first post when you started the trial. There is no reason to think Cass has them, just be sure to keep the checked...especially with the past DKA.

I can't begin to tell you how much insulin Cass needs....I am into gulpers! But, while the numbers are better, it does appear to me that he still needs insulin.

Re: Cassie 12/11 advice.please!

Lisa,
I think when you do shoot, it should be at least .4, something bigger than before when he wasn't doing anything except what we always took for "bouncing". Some dose that will make him go into the higher greens. So I would base my "next shot" plan on being able to see what's going on with that cycle. One of the reasons his numbers weren't really great on insulin might be that the doses were too small to really "force" him to start healing?

Re: Cassie 12/11 advice.please!

Sounds good. The next time I shoot we'll try .4u. I may hold off until afternoon when I can be around, depending on where he is (& how brave I feel) in 6 hours. If he's under 200 I'll wait. I have.no experience with him and low ps's.

Just checked, ketones=0. He's hard to catch but w/ the breeze box I can at least check when I replace the pad (so twice a week, min.).

Re: Cassie 12/11 advice.please!

+72 229

I decided to wait until I'm home to shoot. I'm kinda afraid the .4 will drop him too much.

+76 313

Re: Cassie 12/11 advice.please!

I am glad you are going to start back giving insulin. He needs it. Please keep a check on ketones. It is not necessary to have extremely high blood glucose levels to develop ketones in a cat that has had DKA.

Good Luck!

Re: Cassie 12/11 advice.please!

Kim,
I have been checking for ketones regularly (twice a week, minimum). Thankfully there haven't been any signs. I am definitely getting him back on insulin--in fact, I was going to dose him Sunday morning so I'd be around all day, and then he threw two blues in a row. I'm postponing things because I won't be around today due to finals, but I'll give him a shot this afternoon. I'm kind of afraid the .4 will drop him hard and fast, so I want to be there, at least for the first dose. Thank you for checking up on us.

Re: Cassie 12/11 advice.please!

I'm glad you are going to start giving him insulin again. He is doing so well on such a small amount of insulin I think that once he starts getting even better numbers his P will have a better chance of healing.

I wish it had worked too, maybe he just needs a little more time.

Re: Cassie 12/11 advice.please!

Good luck Lisa! I have subscribed to the thread so when you post, i'll see it. I'm at work but can use my phone. Maybe get a +2 or +3, but no worries,ok?
Carl

+3 260

...or not. Maybe one of his late.nadir tricks. Will check at +6 unless someone rhinks sooner is needed.

Hang in there....and dont forget to breathe
let her body adjust to having insulin again...
it might take a day or 2 to see anything

We're both fine- I just wanted to be here in case. I know what to.do if he goes too low.

It usually takes him 3-4 days to settle into a dose. He's currently trying to be a lap cat but I keep having to get up. :-D

I was hoping for more, but remember, this is just one cycle. I'd stick with it for 3 more cycles, then if the numbers don't go lower at nadir, think about raising by another .2

That happens to me alot, I think that's why they like to lay in DH's lap, he doesn't get up so much!
