Sorry I just sort of disappeared guys. Ive had a lot going on with me and havent been around my computer much.

Ive switched Carls food. Hes now getting the Friskies Pate. It hasnt affected his numbers yet but its only been since yesterday so Im hoping they start coming down. Hes still getting 3u and is still in high 200 to 400 when I test him. Its so frustrating. I also went yesterday and got a new vial of insulin.

Welcome back, Amy.

You are switching doses pretty often, Amy. Although PZI is more adaptable than other insulins, most cats need a few cycles to settle into a dose. We would also suggest you increase the dose by .25 not .5 units. Most people here use U100 needles and the conversion chart: http://www.felinediabetes.com/insulin-c ... rinter.htm

You are getting some mid cycle numbers which is great. It might be time for a curve to see exactly what the insulin is doing (tests every 2 hours over the course of a day.)

Yeah I put him back to 3 units bc i got some high 400 and low 500 hubdreds. The vet said put him back at 3 and do the curve, which I started to do but then I wasnt home and I was lucky my hubby would even do the shots. Things are just crazy right now so Im hoping to get the curve done over the next few days. As long as I dont end up in the doctors again. So hopefully I can get a good curve.

That sounds good. The more data we have, the better we can figure out what is going on. Sometimes it's too much insulin, sometimes too little.

What Sue said. :-D

I'm concerned from your numbers that his dose may be too high, but I don't recall the history of how you got to that dose, etc. Is there some history/reason to think he needs a dose this high? It sounds like maybe he was on higher carb food and you have just switched him to lower carb? If that's the case, I would reduce the dose to 1u for safety until you have more data.

Also do you have all your data in the SS? You mentioned some 500s but I don't see them. Just want to be sure we all have the full picture and can give you the best advice.

Theres days missing and some days i wasnt home to get. The vet wanted the higher dose based on his numbers before. I didnt realize a dose that is too high could make the #s higher? he never mentioned that. Just said we would keep upping it. But the numbers have been higher now that im able to be testing again and he is on the lower carb food with the 3u.

It does sound counter intuitive that higher doses cause higher numbers. It is called rebound: Rebound Sometimes it is caused by low numbers in the middle of the cycle that make the cat bounce back up, but sometimes it also seems to be high flat numbers. It is pretty easy to test if the dose is too high. You pick a day when you will be around, reduce the dose, test for ketones and test often to see what is happening. Sometimes it takes a couple days to clear, but usually, you see some movement downward if the dose is too high and you reduce.

So do we think I should drop his numbers? Hes at 547 today right before hes due for a shot. The numbers just seem to be climbing.

You got an inverse curve -higher at nadir instead of lower- which usually means too much insulin. But the change needs to be on a day when you are around to test, and you need to be testing for ketones.

I think I would try one unit twice daily for a few cycles. (You did not start at one unit, right?) You may see no movement the first cycle, but usually by the second cycle you see something. If one unit won't do, then I would start increasing by .25, holding for a few cycles and then increasing again. If you started over his ideal dose, we should be able to tell.

Every cat is different - no guarantee this will work. But I think it is worth a try.
