Hi
I'm not sure where to post this question so please let me know if I should post it somewhere else.

Natural Choice has a new grain free line which is a pate. It's called Soft Loaf on the label. Does any one know the carbohydrate percentage of this food?

I have had a lot of challenges trying to get 7 cats to eat only low carb wet food. Half the time they don't even like Fancy Feast, sometimes they will eat Avoderm tuna and vegies and Wellness chicken. I have gone through Friskies which they don't like at all. I also buy Young Again Zero Carb that some like and some don't.

Purrcee is still in the green which is amazing and I feel very blessed to be in this position and you are the ones that made it happen. I test him every Monday and hold my breath!

Thanks for the support!! Happy Halloween to all

Re: Natural Choice Grain Free Food

China's been eating Natural Choice pate's on and off for quite some time now. The food chart has them listed, but under different names (they're under "Nutro" Natural Choice)

I have to wonder when they renamed them, if they also changed the recipes.

I've called the company and didn't get a real straight answer as to carb percentage, but China's BG has done as good on the Natural Choice foods as on anything else so I have to think they're comparable to any of the "under 10%" foods on the list.

Re: Natural Choice Grain Free Food

They "claim" they are all in the 5% or lower range. I called them when they made the switch last summer. It's just taken a while for them to show up in the stores.
I think there are 4 senior formula's.

The charts have the old line which is no longer available unless you happen upon a store that still has old stock. I had ordered many cases of the chicken and turkey formula when it happened because it was a lower phosphorus food. ( of course she lost interest after I had a closet full)
I just try to get her to eat a can now every 2 weeks.

They didn't have the as fed values back then when I called. They just had what they claimed to be their own carb calculations.

That's what I got too Rhiannon when I called....their carb calculations and I had to pull teeth to get those! The first person I talked to said "Well there aren't any grains in it so they're zero carb"

Yeah, right lady

But China's BG doesn't do anything wonky when she eats it, so it must be "comparable" to the other foods less than 10%

Howdy sugar parents!

I came across Nutro Natural Choice wet food at several Big Lots stores in my area (Harrisburg, PA)...so I decided to resurrect this thread to see if anyone had come across any more detailed information for the 'as fed' values. At 50 cents a can, I'm tempted to just clear them out (I have one diabetic and one non-diabetic...so they'd get eaten regardless). I currently have an email out to Nutro Natural Choice too...we'll see if I hear back.

The varieties that I spotted were:
- Adult Soft Loaf Turkey Recipe
- Adult Soft Loaf Catfish Recipe
- Adult Chunky Loaf Chicken Dinner
- Adult Minced Chicken & Shrimp Formula
- Senior Minced Cod & Tuna Formula
- Senior Minced Chicken & Salmon Formula
- Kitten Soft Loaf Chicken Recipe

Anyone have any as-fed information on any of these varieties? (I did not see them on Dr. Lisa's wonderful list).

Feel free to recommend a better place to post this if you think there is one.

Thanks!
Russ

No new info, but until I put China on a raw diet, she was eating almost exclusively Natural Choice pate's and her blood glucose was as good on NC as it was on Fancy Feast or any of the other canned foods that ARE on the chart, so I have to think they're fine for our diabetic kitties

I only bought the pate's...not the minced though.

And for 50 cents a can, that's more than half price...wish I was closer! I'd help you empty the shelves of them! (of course as soon as we did, our cats would refuse to eat it...lol)

I ran the Soft Loaf Turkey recipe through my SS calculator (based on Dr Lisa's calculations) and it came out to 1.9% but that is w/ the inexact Guaranteed analysis info supplied on their website. But it should be fairly low, I may check out our Big Lots! I wish they had phosphorus info though. It would be nice for variety for the civvies though.

Thanks for the encouragement, Chris. I'll feed what I think looks low carby (the pate) and take some regular BG readings to make sure Diabetes Dandy isn't spiking. We had our first hypo episode a month or so back (just a moderate one...acting all weird, pacing around, sniffing and licking everything, weird stevie wonder head bob...no seizure), so I've been checking regularly anyways. Worst case scenario is I can give them a try and the non-diabetic Rhubarb gets to eat a higher quality food.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that gets hornswaggled by my cats. They seemed to like Merrick's Cowboy Cookout, until I bought two cases....then they wouldn't touch the stuff. I'm still convinced there was something wrong with it (they eat ANYTHING, even tofurkey, if offered...not low carb, btw). Merrick was kind enough to give me a refund and send the cases to their QA lab...so no loss at least.

Ann, thanks for running your numbers as well. I ran them through some calculator I found online when I was at the store yesterday and was getting negative carbs...so I decided not to trust it. I'm sure yours is at least more accurate than that one.

Man, if only the discount grocery store near my house would get the 3/$1 Eukanuba cans again....that was the life...I must have bought close to 100 cases of that stuff. Unfortunately Big Lots has a very limited number in stock.

If I hear anything specific from Nutro Natural Choice, I'll absolutely share.

Thanks again!

R

I ran it through a carb calculator too and got -1.9 carbs which just goes to prove the point that the "listed" nutritional analysis is useless

Good luck! China liked it, so that was a plus

Wow. Very quick reply from Nutro...although it seems almost too good to be true...to their credit, none of the varieties seem to contain any sort of grains, starches, or vegetables...they seem to be mostly meat based ingredients and vitamins and minerals. So, maybe I lucked out...that said, if you live in Harrisburg, York, or Hanover, PA, I've raided your Big Lots like a rabid pirate. My bad. I'll let you know if any of the varieties seem to have an impact on Dandy's numbers.

"Dear Nutro Natural Choice,

My cat is diabetic. That said, I am always on the look-out for high quality food that is suitable for him to eat (and for me to buy in bulk). One component that makes food suitable for him is the % of calories from carbs as fed. Would you be able to provide me with the % of Calories from Carbs As Fed for the following Natural Choice Cat Food varieties:

- Adult Soft Loaf Turkey Recipe
- Adult Soft Loaf Catfish Recipe
- Adult Chunky Loaf Chicken Dinner
- Adult Minced Chicken Shrimp Formula
- Senior Minced Cod Tuna Formula
- Senior Minced Chicken Salmon Formula
- Kitten Soft Loaf Chicken Recipe

If you would be willing to provide me with these details, I would be happy to share them with my various feline diabetes groups on the web. If the numbers are suitable, I'm sure that could drive in some sales for your company. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Thank you,
Russ
