Is there a general rule to the number of carbs there should be in a wet cat food for a formerly diabetic cat? I'm going to switch my cat from prescription Purina DM wet to Fancy Feast or something comparable. Just want to make darn sure I don't give her something that brings back the diabetes. Thanks for any advice.

Jeff,
just refer to Dr. Lisa's list. Pick any of the foods that are under 10% carbs.

Ideally, you want to continue to feed as if the cat were still diabetic and not in remission. This is the safest way to feed to hopefully continue the remission process.

That being said, sticking with the 10% or less carb is best. If you change to Fancy Feast, the Classics (pates) are what you want to use. They are under 10% and average 5-7%. Depending on how carb sensitive your cat is, that may even be too high.

For the longest time, I was feeding Maui 0-3% carbs and now she's ok with the Fancy Feast Classics which are higher.

Have you seen Dr. Lisa's food comparison chart to see the values? http://www.catinfo.org

Not a huge difference from the 5-7% that someone said but Fancy Feast classics are all 5% and lower. At least according to the chart. The Salmon is even 1%. In case you want a bigger variety, the list has a few under other names but they are also classics. The 4 kinds under tender and the turkey and giblets under other. All 5 actually say Classic on the cans. The 2 kitten flavors are also 5 and under. If your cat is like my cat you will need all the flavors. The frustrating part is that I have to go to three different stores to get them all. But they are more expensive online so it's worth it. The cheapest places I found are Walmart and Target. And if you live near a Meijer they are good too.

I know some people avoid fish...the chicken and also the beef flavor actually have fish in them if you look at the ingredients. But the beef & chicken flavor doesn't. It's strange.

A diabetic cat in remission is still a diabetic cat. 'Remission' means that the diabetes is diet controlled. Keeping to a low carb diet is crucial. Fortunately there are oodles of suitable foods out there!
