Baybay was diagnosed in December with feline diabetes. He also had a uti. We have tried everything and as soon as he goes off meds hes peeing blood with what urine does come out. He is still not regulated by a long shot. The infection caused HI bg's and the sugar irratates the bladder. He was on all the reg antibiotics but still sick so we had a culture done which showed an enormous amount of yeast in his bladder. He was on zenequin and fluconozole. He did good but had terrible bout of the runs. He was able to urinate like a racehorse but the runs got so bad we switched to Baytril and fluconozole. I ran out about 7 days ago and now he is back to having blood in his urine and miserable. Its a vicious circle infection causes high numbers and high numbers cause irratation. Has anyone else delt with this before? They did an ultra sound and either they saw a small mass or blood that had piled up. Baybay is a neutered male 11 yrs old and takes 4 1/2 units humilin N he weighs 11 pounds. He eats skinless boneless chicken and wellness core. Ive almost got him weaned off dry but not quite.
I have another diabetic cat"Scan" he was on insulin for 3 yrs and has honeymooned for the last 3 yrs. he is 13.
Thanks in advance Tonya baybay and Scan

May I ask how the UTI was diagnosed? Was a sterile sample of the urine obtained and was Otherwise, you just try an antibiotic cocktail which can cause more harm. You said the culture showed a lot of yeast - but was there also bacteria present? Please make sure both a culture and sensitivity was run. That's the only way to know if there's an infection as well as the yeast, and what bacteria is behind it. It's also the only way to know for sure which antibiotic will cure the UTI. Baytril is pretty powerful if there is no bacteria present, and has a risk of blindness,

If not a UTI, it could be cystitis, which is not affected by antibiotics because it's an inflammation and not an infection.

And you may want to consider a new insulin. Humulin N is pretty much the last choice of insulin for cats... it tends to be very harsh. Is he on 4.5u once or twice a day? PZI, Lantus or Levemir are pretty good options.

He originally had just a steryl urine sample drawn at the vets, then he had 2 more that were sent to specialists for a culture and to test for infection. Yes he has a bacterial infection which is almost antibiotic resistant., thats why he was on zenequin or baytril which are in the same family. The baytril is a little less harsh on bayBay and seemed to work quick. The specialist my vet talked to said for this type of problem to use fluconozole and baytril or zenequin. I have to take him back in 2 weeks for another ultrasound.Baybay's ketones are great and his high today was 271 . I have a animal validated meter and get my strips from animaldiabetes.com When compared to vet my meter was only off a little .
thank you for your reply its most appreciated

Hi tonya. :-).

You are already two steps ahead of most people who first come to this site. You already know about ketones, rebound effect and home testing. Since you had a diabetic dog you dealt with all of this. If you switch insulin I think that will solve part of your problem. With my cat it is chronic skin infections. We have ended up switching antibiotics several times. Even though Nomad is fairly well regulated but still gets them every two months or so. Hopefully we can get some other members who have dealt with UTI s in cats.
