i have changed my diabetic cat to all canned food recently. When i start back to school next month i am not sure what to do. i have 3 more cats who will gulp down any wet food that is around. i am gone for 10 hours a day. I don't want him to run out of food during the day, and I don't want to put down dry food for that long, he would eat too much. If I separate him from the others, how long can the canned food stay out? Should I worry about that? How about leaving 2 bowls, some frozen that could thaw during the day? Are there feeders that will keep it cold? Thank you for any suggestions. Terry and kitty Bill.

I feed my cats twice a day; they nibble on it for several hours until it is gone. That can take a good 8-10 hours. If the area is air conditioned, it should be file leaving it out.

Yes, you can freeze some of it to be nibbled as it thaws.

Some folks here find the Pet Safe 5 very good at distributing timed meals.

I also feed mine twice a day. When I had a diabetic kitty, I would make sure they eat before giving insulin. Sometimes it helps if you can feed your sugar kitty separately from the other cats to keep them from stealing the food.

Your cats will quickly adjust from free feeding to learning to eat twice a day.

I am concerned about Bill running out of food while I am at work. He still wants to eat small portions of food at a time. I plan to feed and shoot 45 minutes before I leave in the morning. He will still have 2/3 of the 3 ounce can of Fancy Feast and another frozen one that will thaw in a couple of hours. How much should I leave if I am usually gone 9 or 10 hours? I am not wanting it to go bad, but I want to leave enough. I teach school and get stuck at meetings, etc. a lot. I don't have time ti come home at lunch usually either. Is there timed feeder that keeps food cool? I can't find one.

If your house is air conditioned, the food will be fine sitting out to be nibbled.
A PetSafe 5 timed feeder can ensure the food is spaced out and not eaten all at once, if necessary.
