Those of you who remember me & Racci from the beginning in 2009 when Racci was dx'd might remember that she is the kitty who absolutely refused to eat canned food and thinks it is disgusting. She would rather starve for days no matter what brand or how I mixed it with her regular food, in spite of the fact that her mom loved it and set a good example. Well she's been on Purina DM dry which she unbelievably loves, go figure! and I've been offering different canned foods still here and there, mixed with her food, separate, with her tuna, which she loves warmed up, etc with not luck.

Yesterday inexplicably, I hit upon a winner! She has been gobbling it down! The only problem is that it has some gravy! I see Wellness Turkey on the chart but this is Wellness No Grain Minced Turkey Entree Bits in Rich Gravy. I served it to her mixed with a little white chunk tuna warmed up and water mixed in. I can't believe it but She absolutely loves it! Are the carbs okay though? Have I created a monster by getting her to love something too high in carbs  or is it the first step finally in switching her and where do I go from here?

I don't see anything in the ingredients that would raise the carb content--the peas are the only questionable ingredient, and only because they're a bit higher on the ingredient list. Someone would have to call the company and get the as-fed values to be sure, but it looks pretty ok to me.

Fortunately, Wellness is one of the cat food companies that freely shares their as-fed values. It should be easy to get the values, and you can plug them into the spreadsheet from Janet and Binky's page.

Thanks Julia. I was worried about the gravy. I didn't think of the peas. I will call them tomorrow unless someone knows. I was hoping someone had fed that and knew. I can't read the tiny print on the can, I have tried and tried but my eyes are just not good enough. I did go on line though but naturally no carbs listed. I would have tried to do the formula, not sure if I understand it tho. She loves it but I don't want to keep feeding it if it is worse than the Purina DM which she also loves. I'm wondering if I should give it for dinner too.

This is something new from what I understand. I tried their older types and she would never eat them. If these are good for her, I will try all the flavors.

Thanks again.

Melanie, if you can call and ask them for the as-fed values for the following items for the minced turkey, I'll help you plug them in the spreadsheet.

Protein
Fat
Carbohydrate
Fiber
Phosphorus

I'll give them a call tomorrow. Will knowing that give us the carbs if they don't know them? I know I got the carbs from another company, I think it was Wysong but had to speak to their scientist, which was only possible since they're a US company!

I just spent a couple of days on the phone with Abbot and just recieved my Relion Ultima kit overnighted to replace the Freestyle Lite so that should be a breeze comparatively.

A phone call, 3 strips and pokes and sore ears later, I finally figured out what was wrong with my Relion that I just got. I just had to click that strip in there REALLY hard, 2 clicks, not one and then it worked! Poor Racci! By then the supervisor on the phone decided to send another one anyway just in case this one is defective.
Thanks Julia.

Re:Wellness new Canned Food -Got 'as fed' figures

Okay. I got the figures for the Wellness Minced Turkey with Gravy, No Grain:

Minced Turkey Entrée with Gravy as-fed Values
Protein 10.10%
Fat 6 %
Carbohydrate 3.2%
Fiber 0.46%
Phosphorus 0.37%

I also have the figures for the whole line of the new products like this in I think per 3oz. can. I am waiting for verification on that. They are all lower in carbs than this one (figures) but all are high in sodium. I don't know how bad that is for them but know too much salt isn't good. Will let you know when I have confirmation. If it is per can and I can't get them to do the breakdown to 'as fed' will our calculator do that?

Thanks!
Melanie
