Hello,

I have been doing curves on Fax for the past three days and today I would like to start the transition over to a better wet food. He is currently on Hill's M/D wet food. I read somewhere on here that the Binky food charts do not cover Canadian sold food.
Are there any Canadian kitty diabetics out there that can help direct me to a good low carb food?

So far I know that Fancy Feast chicken and turkey is safe
I am also thinking about Wellness - but are their certain varieties that are better than others?
I am also going to do a price check on EVO 95% today while I am out.

Here is a link to the last thread.

Thanks for all of your wonderful help over the last few days.

Re: switching food

We have lots of diabetic kitties in Canada. So you might want to add something to the title of your post, like switching food--canadian foods needed or something to that affect to make sure you get the right eyes.

Re: switching food-Canadian kitties

We're in Toronto. Evo 95%, Before Grain, Merrick, Wellness...they are all available here, imported from the states. Go Organic is a Canadian brand that is also very good.

Not sure where you live but try a Global Pet Food Store.

Re: switching food-Canadian kitties

Many of the foods on the lists are available here in Canada. I can't offer a specific suggestion as I feed Tony m/d. It works for his ibd, and with multiple issues sometimes what is optimal for one thing is not perfect for others, so I stick with the m/d. I'd just suggest printing it out, highlighting the right number of carbs so that you can find them easily in the stores, and then visit a few pet food stores with large selections. I'd also suggest just buying one or two cans of each as your kitty may not like every one. And pick up a few Fancy Feast grilled with gravy for the times when his bg goes a bit low.

In Canada, we actually have a good selection of grocery store brands that are low carb. Compliments (Sobeys/IGA) and President's Choice (SuperStore, LobLaws) foods are good choices. One big bonus is that the PC and Compliments cost less than FF, and several of them have better ingredients! There are several PC flavours that are low carb- like duck - which FF doesn't even carry.

Not all PC brands or OC brands are carb-free, but most are pretty low. (Anything under about 7% is my own personal guideline).

My guys like the PC and the Compliments just as much as Fancy Feast. Janet has added a section of PC foods to her international food list if you want to check it out. The OC ones aren't on yet because we can't get the "as fed" analysis of the food. Also, WalMart makes a small tin (85g, same as FF) called "Special Kitty" and LOTS of those are also low carb, and cheaper. Janet has quite a few of those listed. Just make sure you are checking her non-US charts.

If they are not in Janet's list, the next best thing is to label read- avoid obvious grains (wheat, rice, corn) and other carbs (potatoes, peas) and things called "food starch".. which I assume is cornstarch, but the "starch" part says "stay away" to a sugarcat.

And good luck!

Hi Roisin and Fax,

If you actually click on the old canned food list on Janet and Binky's site, as opposed to the new list, they have a nice sized list of Fancy Feast that we have in Canada. It took me awhile to figure out what foods were good for Leo to eat. I spent the first few days of giving him higher carb food just because i didn't know any better. Also we have a ton of varieties of Friskies that are on the new list as well.

I didn't know about the Sobey's brand being good choices, that's where i shop usually, next time i'll have to take a look!

Good Luck Roisin

Hi - try Life Stages Performatrin, Chicken and Lamb formula(for senior cats),or Nature's Variety, both available at Pet Value specialty stores. Should be one in Hogtown (Ha Ha - a little Hamilton humour for you!) Best of luck to you.
