Can anyone please help? I'll check back in as often as I can today, as I just registered & posted a Hello I'm New post an hour ago, not sure if I'm posting in correct area on the boards...
My 10 yr old male cat Jordan, his health declining rapidly, new bottle of insulin picked up last wk. am worried sick that it may not have been kept cold enough during shipping am worried it is not a 'good' bottle. Called vet & they say it was kept cold, it's ProZinc.
Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to help my cat? Please? He is now suffering from IBS too.
He's refusing to eat regularly as it leads to diarrhea within half hour. His fave food was Fancy Feast wet food, for about a yr I've been watering it down so it's like soup, he doesn't like to chew it the way he used to, though he has no probs chewing the 'crunchy' FF dry cat food.
Vet told me absolutely NO human foods of any kind. Ever. Is this true?
Jordan did have a gum infection in Aug this yr which was treated with anti-biotics.
My current financial situation and health issues not good. I can not get him to a vet today due to the severe bout with strep throat I have. Second bout with strep this month. Am on anti-biotics
I have absolutely zero help in caring for Jordan.
I give him his insulin at approx 10 a.m. each a.m. and 10 p.m. each night. For over a wk now he is refusing to eat breakfast or dinner, he doesn't want his shots, have never had this happen before. He loves to eat, he snacks on FF dry food ( from my other cats dish ) during the day. SHould I take him off the wet food?
I was told he's to eat 20 to 30 mins before injections. It's what we've always done. Now we're off schedule.
Any ideas how to help calm down his frequent bouts of daily diarrhea?? The Pepto Bismol helped for only 2 days. Am afraid to give him more.
Can anyone please help us, soon ? Thank You.

Are you testing his blood sugar at home? If he is not eating, the insulin could be causing him to go too low and feel sicker.

plain yogurt (unsweetened) can help with diarrhea, or acidophillus capsules (the active ingredient in yogurt)

Where are you located (city/state or province)? We may have some members nearby who could help you get started with testing blood sugar at home.

Re; human foods -- has your kitty had specific problems from human food? Many of us give snacks of boiled chicken

Re: Can someone please help?/THANK YOU!

What a day... had forgotten I'd posted twice, and just posted a reply to my first post but am not at all sure who exactly I replied to. Am sorry but am exhausted and have been for quite some time, today very difficult. Moreso than usual.
Wanted to let you know Jordan absolutely LOVES plain yogurt, it normally helps calm his stomach. The only way he will eat it is if I feed it to him from a plastic spoon, sort of like a yogurt popsicle... he ate just shy of 1/4 cup of it 3 nites ago. Seemed to help, but next morning back to even worse diarrhea probs so I wondered if I'd given him too much of it.
He never had problems with plain boiled or steamed chicken or turkey, ever, and in spite of what that last vet said, I have given Jordan treats of real food, either turkey or chicken. About a yr ago Jordan for whatever reason, decided he didn't want to eat tuna as a treat, ever again, and doesn't to this day.
Made appointment to take him to vet next wk ( the 9th ) by which time I won't be contagious, will be able to drive, I just pray he will not spaz or freak out again in the car. A dear friend from afar sent us the cadillac of kitty carriers, very comfortable and roomy, but Jordan does not do well in the car. It's a very long ride for a sick cat, to this vet's office is almost 40 miles. The OTHER vet we were seeing ( not often, but the one who orders his ProZinc $20 dollars cheaper than other vet ) he's approx 35 miles and it's a much faster route.
Am in a backwoods area of the US and am not ready to tell exactly where I reside just yet.
When I get the hang of these boards I will be less hesitant to tell you the state we ( my 2 cats and I ) reside in. I don't mind saying it's in part of the Ohio Valley area . Not many vets in this particular area treat diabetic cats. Jordan was one of the first.
Thanks to you both for your kind and helpful replies. I will check back in here daily and will learn to post a photo or avatar of Jordan.
Thanks again.

Plain chicken or turkey is okay for cats- some give it as treats for testing and shot time. Just not the lunch meat you get at the store as it is packed with salt and other preservatives so it is good to eat 3 months later.

If you want to put Ohio in the subject line anyone else in Ohio can PM (private message) you for more information and it would be a one on one conversation rather than out in the forum. We suggest dosing advice is done out here so it can help others or corrections can be noted.

I would suggest taking the other cat off dry and feeding both on wet. Once you get rid of the dry you shouldn't have as much LB action going as they won't be eating... well, candy, all the time. The higher numbers can be attributed to the dry food Jordan is eating and will relapse him into full blown FD if he was regulated. You can get other foods besides FF- Friskies, 9 lives, I feed special kitty from Wal-Mart- there are 4 that I know are low carb- Chunky chicken and tuna pate (brown on label) mixed grill (hot pink on label) savory salmon (light pink on label), Super Supper (5.5oz I think is teal, 13 oz cans are light pink). I'm trying out the tuna type too as most other types the tuna is the lowest at 0% but this has rice in it around the middle of the list.

FF might have changed their ingredients without letting us know- they have 6 months to get it on their labels AFTER they changed it so maybe a new ingredient is sparking his IBD.

Hope this helps.

Re: Can someone please help? Thanks Heather

I just posted update under my original 'I'm new here' post to update all who replied there about Jordan and the new but Bad ( or questionable quality ) bottle of ProZinc ordered from NJ a wk prior to Hurricane Sandy.
Vet's office called today to tell me to stop using it. They've ordered a new 10 ml ( regular size ) bottle of insulin from the place they'd always gotten it for years! Back to normal soon! Thankfully I keep leftover ProZinc in fridge, albeit just a little, and just in case of emergencies. So we have enough to get thru the next few days, using the older ( Good ) bottle , not the new bottle of bad stuff. Sorry I;m so tired right now I can barely think
At any rate the older insulin is only 3 to 4 mos old, I always order when there's still some leftover. I live so far from the vets I guess is why I;ve kept some, the expiration dates still great BUT I have heard and do believe it loses potency once the cap is off, and I noticed it seems to do so after being opened for 6 to 8 wks.
I can barely figure out how to use the boards right now, am chalking it up to sheer exhaustion and stress plus am on heavy duty meds for my own strep throat & other health issues right now. sorry
But am VERY interested in learning how to do private messaging. As I live alone ( with my 2 cats ) in a very Iffy area I just don't care to say exactly where on the msg board
Thanks for the idea Heather.
I keep checking both posts and was happy to see more have answered at the other post since I last was alert enough to check in... sigh...
Vet said no more Pepto, but to start him back on the leftover Metronidazole capsules from August. To help with the diarrhea. However they are leftover due to the fact Jordan acted like I was trying to torture him and he put up such a fight each time I tried to give him a capsule, refused to eat any food when I did as vet suggested and sprinkled it on the food.
Am still at my wits end but in post I just wrote at the original post it explains it all a lot better just need ideas how to get him to take the meds orally without him freaking out so badly
Thanks again for taking time out to reply to me
Jordan thanks you too
