He had been diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis and possible IBD and diabetes a few years back, but he’s been in remission from the diabetes for 1 year now.
This summer has been rough on him, he’s had a pancreatitis flare in June (ER visit), one in July, and he’s in the middle of a third one now, (the result of a stressful vet visit.)
Usually his BG goes up a little into the 200’s during a flare & then down again, staying between 80 and 125 once his symptoms are gone. So I’ve not had to re-start the insulin.
With this current flare I have not been able to control his diarrhea with probiotics, so his vet wrote a Rx for Budesonide, 0.5 mg./day.
Scout started it Wednesday, so he’s had 5 doses. I took his BG this a.m. and his numbers were 365 & 395.
I was shocked, then panicked. His regular vet isn’t in on weekends, and I am not sure what I should be doing. He looks & acts normal, but has been super hungry (which might be the appetite stimulant I had to start him on last week when the pancreatitis flare started.)
I feed him 6 smaller meals throughout the day instead of 3 bigger meals, it seems to do better that way, so the longest period between meals is 3 to 4 hours. I’m not sure if I should keep taking blood glucose readings then? Honestly I’m not sure what to do, and if you’ve read this far, thank you.....
I am hoping someone has some thoughts and wisdom on this, maybe some experience?
Sincerely,
Scout & Susan
