Can pain cause higher blood sugar?

I know this sounds like a strange question coming from me (and I should know this) since Jake has been in remission for nearly three years. He is having trouble walking tonight, so I know that it is probably time to add a pain medication to his Adequan injection for his severe arthritis. I had not tested his BG for a while and decided I should check that out. His BG was 225 - I about fell out of my chair. Then I remembered, I think, that pain (which I am sure he is having right now) can cause a higher blood sugar reading?? Do I remember this correctly? am a little (a lot) flustered right now until I can call his vet in the morning.

Thanks,
Judy & Jake

Anything that causes stress or inflammation can cause a rise in BG. Given that arthritis is an inflammatory disease, I would guess that's what's contributing to Jake's uncharacteristically high numbers.

Thanks for your advice although I now all of a sudden have a more devastating problem. See my new post - Jake had a stroke.

thanks,
Judy
