Phew! A very eventful week... Mum had to be hospitalised for 2 nights and a day. Dreaded Keaton’s, dehydration, glucose extremely high and on antibiotics due to UTI.
She's back home and is better. I’m much poorer...
Problem now she hasn’t pooped for almost a week - I was hoping she’d normalise at home. I suspect Antibiotic May have made it worse.. we’ve completed 5 days. One more day left. Can I stop today?
I fear we may have to go for an enema... poor Mum..

Antibiotics usually cause diarrhea, because they kill off the gut bacteria.
Full course of antibiotics needs to be given, or you risk having antibiotic resistant bacteria remaining.
Probiotics such as S. boulardii can help restore the gut bacteria.

Is your cat dehydrated? Pinch up a little bit of skin. It should move back into place easily. If still tented, then dehydration is likely.
Check her gums. do they feel tacky and dry? Dehydration likely.

Enema may be needed. Or you could try to very gently stick your own finger up her butt. It's one step many vets do to get the poop to flow. Suggest you do this in a spot that is easy to clean up. Not your carpeting.

With what sounds like a recent case of DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) you should definitely call your vet.

And test for ketones daily.

Thank you! I was told that penicillin can cause constipation.. she is drinking - maybe not enough... I’ll check her skin... she did not have ketoacidosis. That was checked... she had ketones. Thank you again...

S. boulardii is good for diarrhea, not constipation. There are other probiotics that can help bring back tummy flora. Check out https://felineconstipation.org/ for all you wanted to know and more.

Since you had ketones present, I would definitely not stop the antibiotics.

Thank you all... she was checked before discharged an NO KETONES were present... she was thoroughly hydrated etc... as I said I’m now very poor... but naturally relieved to see her eating etc..

Hi Zee, sorry to hear that Mum's not been well but good to hear she's better. Ref the constipation - I've found that adding a little water or tuna juice to wet food on an ongoing basis helps to prevent this problem, more liquid just keeps things moving better. I also buy the little tins of Applaws with shredded chicken and pumpkin, and feed that if there's a bit of a go-slow ;) - worth a try.

Hope things get back to normal soon - let us know.

Thank you Diana. We’re getting there... slight intervention with a suppository this afternoon worked... phew... I’ll keep an eye on things... hopefully a more peaceful person due...
