Can change in climate affect my kitty's BG

Hey - I had a pretty well regulated kitty back in Tacoma Wa. Recently moved (June 1 this year so plenty of time to get over the stress of moving) but she recently became hypo one day then her sugars have rocked and rolled ever since.. I am wondering if the change in climate (Tacoma to Carlsbad CA (southern cal) may have caused her to have a change in need for insulin. Anyone have any experience with this?

It's interesting that you should post this. @heyhollis and Jai Jai have joined the board recently. Jai Jai had a couple of unexpected lows that may very well be linked to climate changes. FWIW, some cats' BGs are affected by moon phase. Environmental factors seem to affect cats' bodies, as indeed they do our own.

Interesting about climate change. I have tested CJ when she's sunning herself by the hottest window in the hottest room in the house and her BG doesn't change. But I imagine climate change and environmental factors could very well impact readings for some cats. I just haven't seen proof with CJ except when she goes to the vet.

What diet are you feeding, @ctmorris?

Someone posted the cat info link that has all the nutritional information so I went with that list to Petco and got a plethora of high protein / low carb foods. Just started with the low carb diet so I suspect that has something to do with figuring out where her new normal is for insulin. I added a trend line to my graph that charts her levels and it's headed in the right direction. She is a super picky eater and needs different flavors at every meal.

Yes, a change to a low carb diet will impact readings and help lower BG #'s. When did you make the switch?

Keep an eye on the insulin dose. If you haven't already reduced it, as the transition progresses - and possibly for several days after it is completed - insulin requirements may continue to decrease.

I think you'll see more of a change in BG #'s with a switch to the low carb diet than with the climate issues :).

Thanks Mogs - I am monitoring her and charting the results and I've got a great vet that makes house calls!

Thank you for Mogs for tagging me so that I have got some reference whether temperature change affects BGs. My hypothesis is lower temperature results in lower BG. I still cannot falsify this hypothesis because I come across similar situation several times before.

I will try running an experiment on this. Once I got my thermometer (it will be one week later, sorry for keeping you waiting), I will turn on the air conditioner all day to see if there is any change on his BG.

Changing to a low carb food may reduce insulin dose by up to 2 units and may reduce glucose levels 100-200 mg/dL.
